DELAWARE CENTER FOR THE CONTEMPORARY ARTS

Virginia Maksymowicz:
Structure and Metaphor
May 9 - June 22

Using the ideas of canephorae and caryatids, historical figures and
architectural elements in the form of women, Maksymowicz addresses
the significance and power of women as structural support for
society. Maksymowicz sees this form as a metaphor for the role of
women as the pillars of civilization, stating, “My current interest
in the female body lies in exploring metaphors for the foundational
but often unrecognized role of women in supporting social structures.
These include the architectural forms of canephorae and caryatids,
columns and capitals, and their mythological underpinnings through
Demeter, Persephone, and the bread of life.” All of the imagery in
the exhibition is based on research Maksymowicz conducted while she
was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome in the fall of
2006. The drawings and photographs she created were inspired by a
wide range of architectural and sculptural sources, including
Hadrian’s Villa caryatids, works in various museums and churches,
Baroque buildings, and the contemporary architecture of restaurants
and other commercial establishments. Utilizing drawings and casts of
architectural elements and of bread, the artist creates an
environment at the DCCA that speaks to the history of art, visual
culture, and public and private gender roles.

Award for School District
For a very long time, we have presented a $100 award to a high school junior woman. On June 7 (Virginia, Sonia, and Qadira are jurying), we will present this award at the School District building, 440 N. Broad Street.

Women Helping Women: Stitch By Stitch & Environmental Distress:
We discussed the success of the opening and how we were so impressed by the Wilmington Art Bus system. Members remarked on how beautiful the presentation by Sigma Alpha Iota was and how generously the gallery provided such a terrific reception.

We also discussed our frustrations and critiques. We agreed that in the future we will vote as a greater caucus on important details like the use of email addresses on the labels and we will be more specific about the physical hanging systems and details of installation. We also voted to revise the exhibition contact form.

Please see above for the continued tour of WHW:SBS. We are interested in continuing Environmental Distress or an another environmental show as a traveling exhibition.

Here are a few pictures of Artistic Platforms, my most recent sculpture up in Long Branch with the Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts, on the corner of Second Ave and Broadway. It'll be up until mid-October. These were taken in the rain, courtesy of my friend Adam.
I'm happy to report that a few pics of it went into the paper, and I won second place in the Sculptoure Competition!

Come make a day trip to the shore this summer to check out the park!!!

Afghanistan News Center Covers Our Exhibit

From Molly Crowley:

The article about Women helping Women: Stitch by Stitch, has made the Afghanistan News Center.

Rachel Lehr, the Director of Rubia, is in Afghanistan right now. She was the first to see the article listed here. Several people also sent her links to show her the article.

This is really exciting. We are attracting an international audience to our work and our collaboration.
