Treasure Postcards '08

TREASUREPOSTCARDS'08 | emphasizing the importance of arts in empowering women, creating awareness on vital issues related to girls and women, & celebrating their achievements
We invite FEMALE artists from across the globe to celebrate the 2008 International Women's Day* with us by sharing their visual voices/expressions/perspectives, and donating their postcard-sized artwork.

The postcard sized artworks may highlight issues like:

* Women's rights
* Local and global collaboration to end poverty
* Addressing violence against women
* HIV/AIDS and illiteracy
* Education/skill development and economic empowerment
* Success Stories/Achievements
* Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
* or any other issue you think would fall within the framework of TreasurePostcards'08.

The artwork medium could be photography, painting, mixed-media, collages of various materials, illustrations combined with poetry, anecdotes, caricatures, and others. The postcards (exactly 4.5 x 5.5 inch or 14 x 10.5 cm in size) can be designed in portrait/vertical or landscape/horizontal format.

Postcard Artwork Size: The artwork should be 4.5 x 5.5 inch or 14 x 10.5 cm

Post by Date - Deadline: March 08, 2008 (March 8th is for US post; Participants outside the US please consider the time needed for international mailing. You might want to mail your work 1-2 weeks prior to March 08 so that your work is here on time for the exhibit!).

Please note the following:

o Contact Information (mailing address and email; if you have a website please feel free to share):
o Brief Bio Statement (max 150 words in paragraph format)

b.) Brief Description about the postcard
o Content of the artwork
o Materials used

c.) Submission: (no later than March 08, 2008)

o EMAIL your digital image in jpeg format with high resolution to tpp@art4development.net. Maximum three (3) postcard-artwork per artist. Don't forget to include the above requested details (copy Items a & b into your email, fill-out the questions), and email it to us at tpp@art4development.net with a subject line of TreasurePostcard (TPP).

o Please also write your name/last name; country of origin, and title of your work behind the postcard artwork and MAIL the original postcard-artwork to:

II) Donated select works will be exhibited at the 9th Street Gallery in Washington DC and available for sale during an educational event/exhibit to raise funds for a women's shelter/an NGO helping women and educating underprivileged young girls. Further details about the exhibition, educational event, and funds-beneficiary will be posted on the website. So please come back and check out the details!

III) Arts for Global Development will take all precautions to safeguard your work; nevertheless is not responsible for the theft of, loss, and/or damage to the submitted work throughout the project. By participating in this project you are also giving the permission to publish your work in art'ishake and/or any other related Art4Development.Net educative document/publication, website. Please note that this project is conducted on volunteer basis. When you submit/donate your work for the project, it is assumed that you have understood and agreed with the project content, objectives, and terms.

Arts for Global Development, Inc. [Art4Development.Net] is an international non-profit voluntary initiative with a purpose of furthering interdisciplinary, multisectoral, cross-cultural and creative approach in social change, and facilitating creative sector and stakeholders of development together empower socially and economically disadvantaged individuals and communities worldwide, particularly children, youth, and women.

9th Street Gallery in the Historic Shaw District of Washington DC aims to create an artistic and intellectual environment in which to showcase local and international artists.

Newark Arts Council + Gallery Aferro
Call for Fine Art Sculptures
Due March 7, 2008

The Newark Arts Council (NAC) has announced a
competition to create
small sculptures that will be showcased at its April
9, 2008 Annual
Gala at The New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

A Grand Prize winner will be selected to receive a
cash prize of $750.

Up to 25 entries will be accepted for exhibition at
the Gala. The
competition is open to artists throughout the
metropolitan area. The
event, as well as the participating artists, will be
promoted in local
media the NAC. Color images of all works selected for
exhibition will
be included in the evening's souvenir program.

All artists whose works are selected for exhibition
will receive a pro
bono invitation to the Gala and will be seated at the
table where
their artwork is displayed as special guests for the
evening. The
evening provides an excellent opportunity for artists
to mix with
corporate and individual art lovers in an atmosphere
of congeniality.
In addition, the proceeds from the evening will
benefit the ongoing
programs of the NAC, including the ArtStart Grants
program.

Submission Requirements:

• All entries must reflect the theme Art & the City
and suggest the
role of art in urban America.
• Artists may use any materials of choice, with an
understanding that
they should be compatible with a dining experience.
• Work must be three-dimensional and base should not
exceed 15" x 15";
height should not exceed 24".
• Works should be freestanding, have a stable base,
and will not be
placed on pedestals unless deemed integral to work's
presentation and
included with the submission.
• All entries must be received by March 7, 2008.

packaged in

Artwork will be offered for purchase at the gala
through a Silent
Auction. The artists and the NAC will share equally
in the proceeds
of the auction, with the artist being guaranteed a
minimum of $200 for
works sold. Subject to IRS rulings, an artist whose
work exceeds the
value of the purchase price may be allowed to claim a
deduction in the
amount exceeding the purchase price or auction amount.
Any works that
are not sold must be picked by the artist by April 11,
2008. NAC and
Gallery Aferro will not be responsible for works that
are not picked
up by this date.

If you will participate, please email phila_wca@yahoo.com, so we can expect your work. We still have some fabric that we can mail, but we must receive your $25 participation fee ASAP to mail fabric. Remaining fabric is available on a first come, first serve basis. You can also use your own 10 X 10 inch piece of fabric. You are not required to use ours.

Rubia is a project of Social & Environmental Entrepeneurs (SEE), a registered 501(c) [3], which provides non-profit status. Rubia serves women in Afghanistan, offering education, skills training and income opportunities through the promotion of their traditional handwork. Rubia is committed to building sustainable business in a fragile environment, empowering women while respecting traditional ways, reviving and preserving traditional crafts.

Exhibition: The quilted piece will be displayed during May 2008 in the Women's Caucus for Art-Philadelphia Chapter show "Women Helping Women: Stitch by Stitch" at the Redding Gallery in the Louis L. Redding City/County Building, 800 French Street, Wilmington, DE 19801. We hope to show the piece in several traveling exhibits, and we will let you know when those are announced. The completed piece will ultimately travel to Darrai Noor, Afghanistan.

The WCA-Phila has fabric that we can mail you (as supplies last), or you may use your own. (Must be 10"x10")

Please observe the motifs of the Afghan women as seen on the Rubia site and create your response and interpretation of the theme through images of the poppy, the rubia logo, etc. as found on Rubia Website . We have just posted New and Additional Designs and Examples of Embroidery from our counterparts in Afghanistan.

We will use fabric artwork embroidered by the Afghan women and we add to it your pieces (quilt style) with squares created by WCA members to create an impressive larger tapestry piece.

Rubia is a project of Social & Environmental Entrepeneurs (SEE), a registered 501(c) [3], which provides non-profit status. Rubia serves women in Afghanistan, offering education, skills training and income opportunities through the promotion of their traditional handwork. Rubia is committed to building sustainable business in a fragile environment,empowering women while respecting traditional ways, reviving and preserving traditional crafts.

News of our project has reached Afghanistan, and there is much support for this collaboration.

It is our goal for this piece to travel to other chapters, to other venues, and to the original artists in Afghanistan.
