i am writing to let everyone know some of my work will be in a show at the Projects Gallery. The show opens on Friday the 5th of September and it would be amazing if you could come and see it. The show sounds like it will be really interesting and I'm super excited to have this opportunity. If you won't be able to make the opening or if you want to go another time, the gallery is open during the week and I can always arrange a special viewing if you're the shy type. Fresh! - Invitational Exhibition Provides a Blank Canvas for Emerging Artists


Projects Gallery opens its 2008-09 season with Fresh! 2008. Inspired by Philadelphia’s rich and multi-faceted artistic talent, this invitational exhibition highlights this city’s emerging artists. The palpable energy of the current art scene has been garnering increasing attention and critical respect. Fresh! is an unique opportunity to bring together disparate artists united not by imposed thematic or material concerns but as a chorus of individual voices heralding the vibrant, varied directions of contemporary art. Selected by gallery Director Helen Meyrick because of her immediate visceral response to their work, these artists diversely employ sculpture, photography, painting and drawing. Regardless of chosen style, material, or subject, these artists are a breath of fresh air.


A sampling of the contrasts in style illustrates the range of the artists, while placing them in the larger context of contemporary movements. Krista Rothwell paints neo-realistic images of herself and her sister on flat, spaceless color fields, demonstrating that the art of painting is far from dead. Carl Marin portrays the confrontation between nature and urban encroachment, echoing current design and kitsch aesthetics. Brooke Holloway’s works on paper require careful viewing, revealing biting commentary on feminist issues through the contradictory tangles of popular culture. Previously a graphic designer, Gregory Farrar Scott’s sculptural work is imbued with humor, cheekily riffing on found objects used to create pseudo-portraits.


Fresh! provides these artists a blank canvas on which to make their mark in the Philadelphia arts arena. Participants include: Cat Badger, Rosanne D'Andrea, Talia Greene, Brooke Holloway, Carl Marin, Itsuki Ogihara, Marilyn Rodriguez-Behrle, Lynn Rosenthal, Mia Rosenthal, Krista Rothwell, Gregory Farrar Scott, Heather Sundquist, and others. Many of these artists are recent graduates from several of Philadelphia’s finest art schools, including Moore College of Art and Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Temple University’s Tyler School of Art.


Fresh! runs from Friday August 29 through September 27, 2008 with a First Friday artist reception September 5th, from 6-9 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. RISDpedia is a collaborative website who serves to document all the products and materials used by artists and designers. Imagine if you looked up epoxy on wikipedia and, instead of finding information about the chemicals that are used to make it, there was a list of all the different epoxies available, with full information on each of them: how to use them, what they work with, what they don't work with, etc.

Opportunity: Book/Paper/Scissors

We are pleased to announce that the Free Library of Philadelphia has
once again offered to host the Book Paper Scissors Artists' Book Fair.
The date is Saturday, November 22, 2008. So mark your calendar now, and
plan to do all your holiday shopping in one fell swoop.

We are sending out the call (attached) for people who would like to
participate as vendors this year. Table space is limited, so please
respond soon! This is a great opportunity to show work, sell work, and
see what book/paper/scissors people are doing. Artists’ Books, blank
books, handmade paper art, prints, paper jewelry . . . if it’s
paper-based art, it’s welcome.

We are also looking for volunteers to run one hour workshops for
children at the Free Library that day. Let us know if you are interested.

You will see that we are asking for $25 for members to participate this
year. This money will go to the Free Library (which had set up/take down
expenses that need to be covered this year). The fee for non-members is
$50. If you are not a member, consider joining. For a mere $75, you can
become a member AND have a table at the fair.

Featuring the stunning, vibrant movement style of St. Lucia-born choreographer Tania Isaac, stuporwoman is an operatic and humorous fairytale of motherhood and parenting in the twenty-first century. Generated through a series of workshops with women from a diverse range of racial and economic backgrounds, stuporwoman offers a tongue-in-cheek, serious yet satirical peek at multigenerational perspectives on work, family, conflict, and the often absurd results of balancing it all. With original text written by Guggenheim Award-winning playwright Bridget Carpenter, and live music by Philadelphia Opera Company violinist Heather Zimmerman, stuporwoman navigates culture, class, and the expectations of motherhood in an interdisciplinary work of dance, music, and verse for audiences of all ages.

Donation for Planned Parenthood

I recently came across your website and was wondering if your organization would be interested in participating as an
art donor at the 20th Annual Fall Event & Auction for Planned Parenthood. The event takes place on Nov.8 at
Artesano Iron Works gallery in Manayunk.

During the event, we are looking to auction art from Philadelphia area artists to raise funds. Of course any
such donation would come with a tax receipt and an opportunity to showcase a work of our in front of our
most prominent supporters.

Time Change for 2008-2009 Meetings

Advocacy Alert

Dear Michelle, Philadelphia art education needs your immediate help! Last week we told you that administrative restructuring at the School District of Philadelphia could lead to the elimination of Tessie Varthas and Virginia Lam's positions. Effective the end of August, their positions will be eliminated, and they will be reassigned to teaching positions in individual schools. This will decrease the administrative and supervisory capacity in the Office of Creative and Performing Arts by fifty-percent. Tell the School Reform Commission that Philadelphia students deserve centralized, expert and effective coordination within the Office of Creative and Performing Arts! Attend the SRC meeting on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 2pm at the Philadelphia School District Administration Building, 440 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, 2nd floor auditorium. Please attend-we need an overwhelming crowd! Thank you for taking action!

Artist Kathy Dobash's submission of

Commemorative Relief Sculpture 2

was recently accepted for exhibition in

The Northeast PA Regional Art 2008.

The opening will take place on October 11th beginning at 2PM at The Hope Horn Gallery at The University of Scranton. The progressive opening will include culinary appetizers and a variety of music at each of the participating venues, concluding with the awards ceremony at Keystone College at 6 PM.

The fifth regional biennial for Northeastern Pennsylvania and surrounding counties, NEPA REGIONAL ART 2008 is a cultural initiative of four visual arts venues. The exhibit takes place concurrently at each site: The AFA Gallery, The Linder Gallery at Keystone College, Mahady Gallery at Marywood University, and The Hope Horn Gallery at The University of Scranton.
The Juror is Mary Holahan, Ph.D., Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Delaware Art Museum. Recent exhibitions she has curated include a major retrospective of the work of Fernando Botero, featuring paintings, sculptures, and drawings chosen from Boteroʼs private collection, and an exhibit of Nickolas Murayʼs photographs of Frida Kahlo and her circle.

From Kathy Dobash: National Board Meeting Notes

A few comments about the road trip to Washington, DC:

My co-pilot for the trip was Marie Elcin. She posted some important notes from the board meeting in Washington DC! She did have me driving in circles around Washington - That is just a little joke between us now.

She was better than a computerized navigation device. A great companion to have on a long road trip! Marie tolerated my little stop in Maryland to admire a large yellow field of sunflowers.

Please note the important new direction for the WCA Women's Caucus for ART:

The current membership would like to reflect our desire to be positive agents for social change in our communities. This is very important work. The most effective art is for positive social awareness of our day to day problems. This is my opinion.

I hope to add my contribution as an artist to bring about this change. I hope we attract artists in the future to shift to a global
perspective: To think locally and act globally.

The collaboration between the WCA Philadelphia Chapter and Rubia shows strength. This example can be a role model for future endeavors.
