WCA Philadelphia hosts Girls Gotta Run exhibition at Holy Family University Gallery, September-October 2009

http://www.girlsgottarun.org/

About the Foundation: “The Girls Gotta Run Foundation (GGRF) is a volunteer organization founded in 2006 to raise money to provide support for impoverished Ethiopian girls who are training to be runners. Training to be athletes allows them to stay in school, avoid early marriage, and gain personal independence. Besides athletic shoes, GGRF provides money for training clothes, extra food ("calorie money"), coach subsidies, and other training-related expenses.

We were inspired by the spirit and determination of the girls in the December 29, 2005 Washington Post article written by Emily Wax, "Facing Servitude, Ethiopian Girls Run for a Better Life." She relates not only the tremendous challenges and difficult problems faced by Ethiopian girls, but also how female Ethiopian athletes, especially runners, are serving as role models and inspiration for them.
By providing support for these aspiring athletes, Girls Gotta Run gives Ethiopian girls the chance to improve not only their lives, but also their families and communities.”

Deadline February 15, 2009

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), in partnership with NewCourtland is pleased to offer Philadelphia area artists the opportunity to participate in an exciting, new, community-based fellowship. Through the NewCourtland Artist Fellowship, eight artists will be selected to bring innovative and engaging art-making to residents of the vast NewCourtland network (http://www.newcourtland.org). In order to apply, artists are asked to develop an intergenerational project that brings NewCourtland’s residents together with school age children/teens to create a meaningful experience and an exciting artistic project. Work created by residents and their school age partners during the 2009 Fellowship Program will be exhibited with the work of the artist fellows in a large, well publicized exhibition.
Accepted artists will receive a fellowship award of $2,500 (to be paid in two $1,250 installments). Once artists receive this award they will be responsible for conducting ten 1.5 hour workshops weekly for NewCourtland residents (10-15 residents) and their student partners (10-15 students). Kathy Dobash facillitated the following:

An exhibit of the art created will take place during the week of
November 24, 2008. Hazleton YM/YWCA, Hazleton, PA.

The participants are school-aged children between the ages of
6 and 12 years old. This after school activity is a great way for area youth to unwind at the end of the week and learn how to express themselves through art.

Classes meet on Fridays. The next two sessions are
Friday, November 14TH and friday November 21ST.

The children are creating abstract expressionistic landscapes.
Various landscape paintings by Vincent Van Gogh inspire their painting styles. Some of the collaborative works will be donated for exhibition and educational purposes in Luzerne County.

"Painterly Abstract Expressions of Luzerne County Landscapes"
is made possible by The Scranton Area Foundation, which administers funding from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Partners in the Arts(PPA).

Location: Hazleton YM/YWCA
