We are still collecting submissions for projects with the teens, as they are currently wrapping up with their current artist-in-residence and will be selecting from the first round of proposals soon. http://www.fleisher.org/contact/job-posting6.php

National Conference 2010 Update
Message from Janice Nesser, Conference Chair and President-elect:
Hello all-
I am in the process of setting up a hotel block for the February 2010 WCA conference in Chicago.
We have chosen the Hotel Allegro http://www.allegrochicago.com. It is a very nice, boutique hotel. It has great amenities and ample space for mingling. This will also be WCA headquarters and the place to go to pick up all your conference info.
The Allegro is about 5 blocks (.5 mile) away from the Cultural Center (LAA awards) and about 10 blocks (1 mile ) from the Hyatt (CAA). We have a great rate of $125 a night (2 double beds, queen or king) and $ 225 for a suite (1 king bedroom and living room with a fold out couch).
The CAA conference will run Wed. Feb 10 -Sat. Feb.13
The WCA conference will run Thur Feb 11-Sun Feb 14 with the Board
meeting on Mon Feb 15 until 3pm.
In setting up the room block, we have the following issues..
- once we use up the block we may not be able to add more rooms at
the at the same rate.
- we need to use 80% of the rooms we hold. If we do not WCA is
liable for the unused portion.
- this is Valentine's weekend so hotel space may fill up fast.
I am trying to see how many rooms I need to hold.
Please email the following information to janice_nesser@nationalwca.org
ASAP:
1. If you plan on attending the conference
2. If you plan on staying at the Allegro
3. If staying at the Allegro, nights you plan on staying ie Wed-Mon
Thank you for your time and help.

Hello-
Before it goes away, I wanted to invite you to the closing reception (on Sunday, October 4th from 2 - 4) for my Gnome Project (Gnomenculture) at the Carriage House at the Islip Art Museum. Gnomenculture is part of Projects '09, a residency and site specific installation project given yearly at the Carriage House of the Islip Museum. I feel very lucky to have had this opportunity and suggest that all my artist friends who think in terms of installation look into this, too.
Gnomenculture began for me from a visit to the Carriage House/Islip Museum when I found a gnome broken to bits in the parking lot. At first I wasn't sure if it was an installation (it was so perfectly distributed) or vandalism. After checking with the museum director, Mary Lou Cohallen, I photographed the debris and then collected it. This led me on an odessey of research both of gnomes and of the grounds and buildings of the Islip Museum and the Carriage House. The grounds there are lovely, sporting woodlands, a garden, historic buildings, even a lake with ducks, geese, and swans. This provided me with plenty of stuff to forage for installation materials. Research into the gnome including the Gnome Liberation Front, gnomes in literature (those "little people" in Rip van Winkle for example), and in modern culture (think Travelocity gnome and the gnome in the movie Amelie) provided other ideas. I restored the gnome (Art, is his name by-the-way) as an artist who recreates his own world via the Islip Museum for himself and other emboldened fellows.
Since many of you may not be available to see the exhibit, I am including some still shots. This cannot give you the full experience, but it may whet your appetite to envision more. Some details on materials-- there are close to 500 photographs, paper mache and clay gnomes, gnomes and small statuary collected from the local area, three reverse glass painted windows, hand-painted leaves, vines made of wire, and little scenarios involving the gnomes both in 3-d and pictures/collage. I hope that this is a little piece of whimsy that is as much fun to explore as it was to make.
I look forward to seeing or hearing from you!--Carol

Opportunity: Welcome House
The Welcome House needs volunteers!
WCA Member Michelle Wilson and Mary Tasillo are participating in the Welcome House public art project in Love Park on Friday, October 9, as part of this Design Philadelphia and First Person Arts event. We will be engaging park visitors in making pulp prints and drawings about the park space. We are seeking volunteers on October 9, for the whole day or only for part of it, to talk to interested passers-by about the Welcome House project to while the Michelle or Mary are engaged with other visitors. We would love to have some folks there to lend a hand on our day who might be interested in learning about papermaking or screen printing - though no experience is neccessary.
There is a chance that volunteers will receive free First Person Arts tickets. I have included our press release about the project below.
The Welcome House project (www.thewelcomehouse.net) is getting some great press (see the new City Paper cover story). If you are willing to lend us some of your time, or have any questions, you can email me at
michelle_print@yahoo.com. First Person Arts can also be contacted directly. Dan is the guy doing volunteer coordination: dang@firstpersonarts.org.
Thanks so much!
BOOK BOMBS SHELTER
PART OF THE WELCOME HOUSE PROJECT
October 9, 2009
10am-6pm
Press Release
welcome house
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Philadelphia, PA - Sept. 22, 2009 -
Philadelphia's First Person Arts Festival is proud to host BOOK BOMBS as
part of the Welcome House Project. BOOK BOMBS is a collaboration between
artists Mary Tasillo and Michelle Wilson. The Welcome House is a 10 foot by
10 foot transparent cube installed in Philadelphia's own Love Park,
featuring artist projects by day and video of the day's activities by
night. On October 9, 2009, 10am-6pm, as part of their day-long residency,
BOOK BOMBS will utilize handmade paper and community participation to
create a site-specific one-night installation called Book Bombs Shelter.
This event is free and open to the public.
BOOK BOMBS is a collaborative, site-based zine project examining
Philadelphia parks and benches as social spaces, shelters and art
galleries, and will culminate next year as a component of PHILAGRAFIKA
2010. (See bookbombing.blogspot.com.) For Book Bombs Shelter, Tasillo and
Wilson invite the population of Love Park, including office workers,
skateboarders, protesters, passers-by, and the homeless, to create works in
handmade paper about Love Park. The resulting papers will be attached while
still wet to the interior of the Welcome House, creating an evolving visual
conversation about the nature of urban public space in general and Love
Park in particular. In addition, the pieces will be documented on the
project blog and used as material for the upcoming zine publication about
shelter, homelessness, and urban space during PHILAGRAFIKA 2010.
The Welcome House is a project conceived and curated by artist Marianne
Bernstein and presented by First Person Arts in collaboration with
InLiquid.com. Designed to re-imagine art spaces, art practice, and
community engagement, artists were invited to propose one-day residencies
using the space as a nexus for public interaction. All daytime events will
be filmed by klip collective videographer Ricardo Rivera and projected onto
the cube at night for public viewing. Following the project will be an
exhibition of the works created in the Welcome House at the Painted Bride
Art Center, located at 230 Vine Street in Philadelphia, in November 2009.
The exhibition will remain on display during the First Person Arts Festival
and through the end of 2009.
