News: Artist-Museum Partnership Act Introduced in Congress
Artist-Museum Partnership Act Introduced in Congress
The Artist-Museum Partnership Act of 2009, legislation introduced in both houses of Congress, would allow a fair-market-value tax deduction for charitable contributions of literary, musical, artistic, or scholarly compositions to collecting institutions such as museums, libraries, and archives. At present, a donating artist, writer, or composer can only deduct the cost of materials used to create the work, which is not a fair incentive to donate and also hurts the missions of public and nonprofit institutions nationwide to increase public access to these unique creations.
The sponsors of the bill—Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Robert Bennett (R-UT) for S 405 and Representatives John Lewis (D-GA) and Todd Platts (R-PA) for HR 1126—hope that past enthusiasm for such legislation will grow in the current 111th Congress. Although similar Senate bills have passed five times in previous years, the House version of the bill in the 110th Congress had 111 cosponsors. Now that a new Congress is underway, more cosponsors are needed to help advance the bill.
The American Association of Museums has worked with the Association of Art Museum Directors to provide a draft letter that you can use to encourage your federal lawmakers to cosponsor the bill. With your help, this important legislation for both artists and institutions can move forward.

This exhibited is funded through the Puffin Foundation
My project, Road Shrines: A Peripheral Blur, is based on photographs of road shrines located in New Jersey (funded through the Puffin Foundation).
These images are the result of my conscious effort to make works that immortalize the shrines. This has been an interesting, convoluted process: to celebrate the object that is itself a celebration. The art cannot be/is not a celebration of the person killed, since other than what the shrine provides, I had no insight into that person or the accident when I was making the images. I only had the visual efforts of someone who marked the spot and celebrated someone’s life/death. It is from this space that I began my project.
My notion is that, in reality, art work does not reach the general public and that contemporary art seems to only reach a select viewing audience. This art work creates a dialogue with ordinary people. Car accidents have a random nature to them. We all become ordinary people when in grief. This project creates a dialogue charged by the leveling nature of grief.
Road shrines are on most highways in New Jersey. One may or may not take note of them. This project acknowledges the existence of these shrines and acknowledges the importance of each one to someone. This project explores the pain of loss. One must acknowledge the fact that someone felt compelled to erect the shrine on the place of death. This project asks the viewer to stop and listen to the silent scream of their fellow earth mate.

A brief tutorial of how to build free Google blogs and websites will also be included. (If you would like to present these topics with Bonnie MacAllister, please let us know, and we will get your name on the WCA-DC program.) Sign up to carpool by emailing bmacallister@earthlink.net . Bonnie has room for three more in her car (two more if Alison decides to come.) We can always add a second or third car if we have drivers! We reimburse gas and tolls.--
Upcoming Shows:
"Girls Gotta Run," Holy Family University, October 2-30, 2009. Open to all members in good standing (2009 dues paid). Members will exhibit work to the theme of motion, speed, or running. Exhibit sale benefits Ethiopian girls' teams. Members can decide to donate entire piece or portion of sales to the charity. http://www.girlsgottarun.org/ The show will also be flanked by images of the team in Ethiopia. GGRF has new photos of and updates on the girls on their growing teams, Team Tesfa (http://www.patriciaeortman.com/girlsgottarun/teamtesfa/) and the Simien Girl Runners(http://www.patriciaeortman.com/girlsgottarun/teamggr/) if you are interested in learning more. As you know, the Foundation provides money for athletic shoes, clothing, food and coaches' salaries in order to help girls continue to train and to stay in school. This helps them avoid thepossibility of being forced into early marriage, with its potentially life threatening consequences of too early childbirth and/or vaginal fistula...or worse. For fuller information on the problems faced by many Ethiopian girls, you can read Emily Wax's article (Facing Servitude, Ethiopian Girls Run for a Better Life), downloadable from the Girls Gotta Run website homepage (http://www.girlsgottarun.org/.)---
