CAA Affiliate Business Meeting—Chicago 2010 Call for Panel Discussion Participants Contemporary Outdoor Sculpture: Conquering New Venues and Welcoming New Audiences
Sculpture has long been a part of both the urban fabric and traditional museum culture, yet recent installations have successfully transformed notions of public statuary and the role of sculpture within museum culture. This session is dedicated to an investigation of the placement of contemporary sculpture in outdoor venues that are innovative in context and provocative for new audiences. Placements may be within the parameters of an urban center or a museum, or perhaps a new venue previously untapped for the installation of contemporary sculpture. Each of three panelists will present on recent and unique installations that have successfully introduced contemporary work to broad and diverse audiences. Considering Chicago conference site and the session sponsorship by the Midwest Art History Society, emphasis will be placed on Midwestern venues. Please submit proposals by August 1, 2009 to:

OPEN A.I.R. – CALL FOR CURATORIAL PROPOSALS
A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to offer a new opportunity: OPEN A.I.R. 2009. We invite all women artists, curators and other art professionals to submit curatorial proposals for a one-month exhibit to be held at A.I.R. Gallery in Gallery II and/or III during the 2009-2010 season.
DEADLINE: Proposals must be postmarked or hand delivered to the gallery on or before July 1, 2009 at 6pm. Proposals submitted online must be received by 11pm on July 1, 2009.
Art critic Carey Lovelace wrote in Art in America in 2007: “Since 1972, the trailblazing A.I.R. Gallery in New York, the world’s first women’s art gallery, has provided quiet support for those operating outside the art world’s market-obsessed precincts.” In October 2008, A.I.R. opened a new, expanded space at 111 Front Street in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. Each year, A.I.R. holds more than twenty month-long solo exhibitions and at least four month-long curated group exhibits in its three gallery spaces. In addition, the gallery hosts a range of public programs and workshops. Artists working in a variety of media, at various points in their professional development make up our New York Artists, National Members and Fellowship Artists. OPEN A.I.R. will continue the gallery’s mission – to exhibit work of quality and diversity by women and to provide leadership and community to women artists and art professionals.
GUIDELINES & ELIGIBILITY: Proposals must include at least 50% women artists. All women worldwide, regardless of age, curatorial experience, or place of residence are encouraged to apply. Artists may choose to include their own work in the exhibition. Work in all media and materials may be submitted. Exhibitions must include two or more artists. Artists are encouraged to include one or more A.I.R. Artists in their exhibition (see Artists section) Gallery floor plans are available HERE
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Fill out contact information.
Submit an exhibition proposal of 750 words or less.
Submit five (5) images of work by artists to be included in the exhibit. More than one image may be included for an artist, but the total number of images in the application package may not exceed five.
Submit your bio or resume.
Enclose SASE if you would like your materials returned (not for online application).
Enclose $30 Application Processing Fee.
COMMITMENT & BENEFITS: A.I.R. will publicize the exhibit and produce an announcement card or pamphlet. The curator is responsible for writing a press release with the assistance of the gallery director, being present during the installation and de-installation of the exhibit and for giving a talk during the show. A.I.R. does not provide travel costs for artists or curators, but, depending on the availability of funds, the curator may receive up to $500.
SELECTION & NOTIFICATION PROCESS: A.I.R. Gallery’s New York Artists and the Gallery Director will select the exhibition proposal to be realized in the gallery. Proposals will be judged primarily on the quality of the work submitted and the written curatorial proposal. A second finalist’s proposal will be realized in virtual form on A.I.R.’s website during the 2009-2010 season. Artists and curators will be notified of the selected exhibition(s) by email before August 1, 2009.

2009 WILLIAM H. JOHNSON PRIZE - DEADLINE: JULY 31, 2009
Applications for the 2009 William H. Johnson Prize are now available online at http://www.whjohnsongrant.org
Please note that the due date for all applications is July 31, 2009, several months earlier than in past years. Applicants are advised to take note of the change so that they do not miss the deadline. The 2009 William H. Johnson Prize is 25,000 USD and the winner will be announced in September 2009.
The William H. Johnson Foundation for the Arts is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that seeks to encourage African American artists early in their careers through its annual award, The William H. Johnson Prize. Early career African American artists who work in painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, installation and/or new genre are eligible to apply.
William H. Johnson, an African American artist born in Florence, South Carolina in 1901, is the namesake of the Foundation. He moved to New York as a young man to study at the National Academy of Design, and though he was acknowledged as the most talented artist in his class of 1926, he was passed over for a traveling scholarship, most likely because of his race. Rather than see Johnson struggle in the United States, his teacher, Charles Hawthorne, gave Johnson 1000 USD so that Johnson could travel to Europe. This act of faith and generosity was pivotal in Johnson's life, for it provided the seed from which his career flourished.
In the same spirit, the William H. Johnson Prize is intended to encourage the best artists working today. Past Johnson Prize Winners include Laylah Ali (2002); Nadine Robinson (2003); Kori Newkirk (2004); Dave McKenzie (2005); Edgar Arceneaux (2006); Rodney McMillian (2007); and Jennie C. Jones (2008).

Greetings!
It is my please to annouce the completion of the book
Ten Days in the CAPSULE
a collaborative project with Zach Webber.
The book contains images and writings from the project.
We set out to put ourselves in a experimental scenario to complete a relationship from meeting to divorce in the span of ten days to test social norms we are meant to follow. The interesting result of the project was that by pretending to follow the scripted norms, we fell into them ourselves. Please read about it in the book (or on the blog).

From Girls Gotta Run Foundation about Bonnie's trip and another terrific story:
This past Spring, we provided recommendations for GGRF supporter, WCA member and full time Philadelphia middle school educator Bonnie MacAllister in support of her application for this exciting Fulbright-Hayes teaching fellowship program in Ethiopia. She was selected! The group heads out on July 8 for a five week sojourn. You can follow along here:

During the past year, we assisted a brilliant young woman from Occidental College, Kayla Nolan, in designing a proposal to research the benefits of running for Ethiopian girls and women. With it, she won a very competitive fellowship her school offers to students to do summer research projects. She is now visiting, getting to know, and interviewing, in depth, members of all four of the teams for whom we provide some support, as well as learning an enormous amount about Ethiopia in
general. She arrived in Addis Ababa on June 2 and will be there until the end of July. Although the internet is erratic there, she is keeping a blog for anyone who wants to follow along:

OPPORTUNITIES:
GIRLS GOTTA RUN....TO THE FRIENDSHIP HEIGHTS VILLAGE CENTER
Dear Artist,
“A Running Commentary,” a GGRF art exhibit, will be held at the
[Friendship Heights Village Center](http://www.friendshipheightsmd.gov/)
in Chevy Chase, Maryland, in October 2009. You can see photos of the
Center, both inside and out, on various pages on their website. The Center
can accommodate a lot of work, approximately 50 2D pieces, including quite
large ones, both in the long gallery hall and in the very large community
center room, where the reception will be held. The exhibit will be
announced in the Center’s
[Newsletter](http://www.friendshipheightsmd.gov/PDFs/June09NwslttrFINAL.pdf)
that comes out the first of every month, as well as the October issue of
the “Galleries” guide. As you will also note from perusing the
Center’s website, newsletter, and calendar, the Center has a lot of
activity and the art exhibited there has a sophisticated and quite
well-to-do audience.
We invite you to submit up to three works of art that represent the
mission of GGRF in some way, such as girls, running, shoes, Ethiopia. 2D
work may be representational or abstract, in any media, and up to 30” by
30.” We can also accommodate small sculptures. There are two glass
display cases, approximately 23" high, 8" deep, 40" wide, as well as about
a dozen sculpture stands.
Jpeg images of work you would like to have considered, along with your
name, the title of each work, the size and medium, should be sent to me at
pat@girlsgottarun.org by **September 1**, 2009. If you already have work
in our online gallery you would like us to consider, please let me know.
(We will also be hanging some of the art that has been donated to GGRF).
Artists will be notified of acceptance of their work by **September 14,**
2009. The selected work, along with the GGRF entry form/exhibition
agreement, which will be forwarded to you upon notification of acceptance,
should be brought to Beth Cartland’s house, 3705 Morrison Street, NW,
WDC 20015, between 1 and 3 pm on **Sunday, October 4**, ready to be hung
and marked with title, price, medium, and name of artist. Framing should
be done in a professional manner. The exhibit will be hung on October 5
and artists agree that work will remain in place for the duration of the
exhibit. An artist’s reception will be **Sunday, October 11, from 11:30
am – 1:30 p.m**. Art that is not sold should be picked up from the
Center on Sunday, November 1, between 10:00 am – 11:30 am.
The Center keeps a 20% commission on any works sold during the exhibit or
the month after. For this exhibit, GGRF will be asking a $10.00 exhibition
fee per accepted piece, but only 10% of the sales price on any work sold.
Of course we will gratefully accept any additional donation any artists
may wish to make. The fee should be paid at the time of delivery of the
artwork or earlier.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, please feel free to
let others know of this opportunity. Happy creating! And thank you so
much.
Sincerely,
Pat

And thank you so
much.
Sincerely,
Pat
Patricia E. Ortman, Ph.D.

Award Presentation photos
This morning, Virginia Maksymowicz and I were at the Philadelphia School District building for the award presentation to Linda Mak, a Junior from Central High. The photos below show Linda with her mother, and then with her art teacher, Ms Debra Cooperstein. A recurring theme throughout the awards was how important parents are in the success of their children as well as the teachers. It may seem an obvious thing, but it's not. Barely half the awardees were present, which means parents were either unable or unwilling to bring their children for this event.

Ms Cooperstein is entering retirement nex t year, apparently. We honor her work as an art educator in the Philadelphia School District. We kept hearing "Central High" students being called up for awards- which is a testament to her success as a teacher. Best wishes to both Linda Mak and Ms Debra Cooperstein in their future endeavors!

Martha Knox member news

Congratulations to Martha Knox, who is showing 3 pieces at Highwire Gallery this month with the Northwest Artist Collective. Above is a photo of her woodblock print, "Feeding". As usual, I love Martha's combination of image and pattern and her bold color combinations. The exhibit is up through June, and the gallery is at Frankord and Susquehanna Avenues in Fishtown/Kensington.
