Carol Taylor Kearney member news

Carol Taylor-Kearney’s Gnome Project at Projects 2009 at Islip Museum

South Jersey resident and Philadelphia-based artist, Carol Taylor-Kearney, was one of 10 artists selected to create a site-specific installation at the Carriage House Project Space at the Islip Museum on Long Island . Her installation, The Gnome Project—Art Gnome Comes Home began with a garden gnome Carol saw smashed and strewn throughout the parking lot of the Carriage House. After documenting this find and restoring what she could of the gnome, she researched and collected the raw materials for this installation from the environs of the Carriage House. It includes photographs, debris found on-site, and objects (both amassed and hand made) that form a whimsical habitat for the once-destroyed gnome, his compatriots, and visitors. The intent of this installation is to draw attention to the architecture and grounds of the Carriage House in an imaginative and ecologically conscientious way, while returning a happier ending to a story with a sad beginning.
The Carriage House is Long Island 's center for experimental art. Contemporary artists are invited to create installations in the varied rooms of this landmark building. This is the 16th year for the exhibition space located at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip , New York . Projects 2009 also includes Nina Cinelli, Joseph A. Esser, Jessie Henson, Hong Seon Jang, Rufus Lusk, Caitlin Masley, Alice Momm, Viviane Rombaldi Seppey, and Burton Tysinger. The exhibition will be on view Aug. 15th through Oct. 4th, with a reception open to the public Sun., Oct. 4, 2 to 4 p.m. The Museum’s hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10 am to 4 pm, Sunday 12 noon to 4 pm.

Better than Ever: Women Figurative Artists from the 70's Exhibit

ROWAN GALLERY OPENS SEASON WITH EXPLORATION OF
WOMEN ARTISTS FROM ‘70S SOHO CO-OPS

GLASSBORO, NJ – Exploring the contributions of women artists to New York’s downtown art scene in the 1970s, the Rowan University Art Gallery opens its 2009-2010 season with Better Than Ever: Women Figurative Artists of the ‘70s SoHo Co-Ops from September 1 – October 2, 2009. A reception to celebrate the exhibition is September 10 from 5-7 pm in the gallery.

Curated by Sharyn Finnegan, Better Than Ever presents the work of figurative women artist activists who spearheaded the explosive emergence of artists-run cooperative galleries during the heyday of the SoHo art scene in the early ‘70s. At that time, 50 percent of the artists in these early galleries were women - a rare sort of art scene with women proportionately represented. These pioneers validated the co-op model as an engine for women artists to find a public and a community that supported them in pursuing professional careers. They overcame overt discrimination from gallery directors and were empowered by taking their careers into their own hands.

Nineteen women, who were either founders, early members or directors of galleries like A.I.R., Prince Street Gallery and SOHO20 (among others in that exciting period), are represented in the Rowan exhibit by one work from the ‘70s and another from the last decade. This gives a glimpse of the trajectory of their development. The roots of Dotty Attie’s serial narratives can be seen in an early series exploring the process of creation using a portrait drawing of Ingres. Early and late self-portraits most clearly show both the aging process and the maturation of a painting style in Marjorie Kramer and Sharyn Finnegan’s pieces. Current politics engage many now, with work about war by Attie, peace by Selina Trieff and environmental degradation by Cynthia Mailman and Marcia Clark.

Admission to the gallery and the reception is free and open to the public. Hours for this exhibit are Tuesday – Friday, 10 am - 5 pm, or by appointment. For information, call 856-256-4521 or visit www.rowan.edu/fpa/artgallery. Rowan University Art Gallery is located on the lower level of Westby Hall on the campus of Rowan University, Route 322 in Glassboro, NJ.

Lace in Translation at The Design Center

Lace in Translation
The Design Center at Philadelphia University (TDC) presents Lace in Translation, a new exhibition of contemporary work that explores the intersection of luxurious hand-craftsmanship with modern, mass production. TDC’s historic Quaker Lace Company collection is the inspiration for three internationally-renowned artists and designers reconsidering conventional notions of lace. European designers Tord Boontje and Demakersvan, and Canadian artist Cal Lane have created installations specifically for TDC’s unique and intimate space – a 1950s era, Hollywood-style ranch house. From the intricacy of a handwoven raffia curtain, to the industrial art forms of laser-cut fabrics, a welded filigree oil tank, and a lace chain-link fence, Lace in Translation plays with the concept of lace, utilizing unexpected materials and new technologies to transform the Center’s grounds and galleries.

Although the exhibition is based in Philadelphia, we’re inviting artists, designers, lace makers and handwork enthusiasts from around the world to visit the Your Translations section of the exhibition website and to share their work or interesting lace-inspired finds with others in the arts and handwork communities. We want to be inspired by your lace translations whether they be laced, crocheted, cross-stitched, knitted, tatted, embroidered, quilted, beaded, or woven.
Submissions will be featured on the site at http://laceintranslation.com/your-translations. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to visit the site and help us spread the word!

Postcard exhibit for UN Conference Last Call!

Message from Project coordinator Priscilla Otani:

Over the last two months I have been curating postcards that speak out against nuclear weapons and advocate for peace. These postcards, documented on http://wcaartwavesinternational.blogspot.com/, will be exhibited at the United Nations Mexico City conference from September 9-11. I will also discuss this postcard project at a conference workshop. The premise of this project is that civil society all around the world can speak out about social justice through art. Hand-made postcards are perfect vehicles for delivering such messages openly and succinctly.

For those who have created and mailed a postcard to me, thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those who haven't made a card yet, there is still time. The deadline is September 1, but I will continue to accept cards until I leave for Mexico City. So far, 131 cards have been collected - I would love to reach or exceed my personal goal of 300 cards. It would be wonderful to demonstrate the power of the simple postcard.

Visit the blog for mailing directions and to see the submitted postcards!

Member Ellie Brown launches Popsicle Artist Marketing!

Today’s Artist: Marketing Yourself
POP!sicle Artist Marketing

Are you ready to make a full-time living as an artist? Today, it’s harder than ever to survive and thrive financially as a working artist. Still, there are tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of artists from all over the country who do just that! But how? What are the keys to financial success? Is pure talent and creativity enough? Not quite!

To succeed today, you have to augment your innate creativity and technical skills with some down-to-earth business knowledge and skills found outside of the studio. The most important of which is marketing –packaging, and promotion. For instance, at least 50% of your time should be spent getting your artwork seen outside of your studio – at exhibits, shows or special events. Getting into shows gets you recognition – it’s as simple as that! How to do that is the hard part…and I’ve learned to make the “hard part” a bit simpler. And, I’m ready to share my experience and success with you!

Need to know how to successfully apply for a grant? Find a residency or a fellowship? Find and outfit a suitable studio space? I can help. Want to learn how to network with gallery owners, dealers, critics, publishers and other artists? Get press coverage? I can help with that, too. Finding a path as an artist in today’s market is tough, but it becomes a bit easier when I am there to help you.

Grant Writing and Marketing Services
With twelve years of professional experience, I can assist you in gaining the funding and recognition you deserve. I have been awarded over $100,000 in funding in the past X years. Now, I can teach you the practical strategies that I used to win that funding.

I have exhibited my work extensively - both nationally and internationally. This funding includes exhibition awards, full artist residency fellowships, scholarships, lecture stipends, and grant funding. There are millions of dollars in medium-specific grant money, fellowships, exhibition, and employment opportunities – money that I can help you find and win through:

· Learning practical marketing strategies
· Writing a concise artist statement
· Developing a polished artist packet to send to galleries and publications
· Creating a strong portfolio
· Finding sources of grant funding
· Writing winning grant proposals
· Creating a marketing plan
· Applying to exhibitions
