Aesthetic Distance
Virginia Maksymowicz

November 14, 2009 extended through March 7, 2010

Due to the weather emergency, the reception scheduled for Friday, February 26 has been postponed for one week and will now occur on Friday, March 5. NOTE that the time has also changed: 6:00 to 7:30 PM.

Please check the Michener website or call 215-340-9800 for further information and updates.

“Virginia Maksymowicz's sculpture has the feel of 'real art' of art that looks like art.
And did you also notice that each of her sculptures of female nudes in her Michener Sculpture Garden solo, 'Aesthetic Distance,' sits or crouches atop a tall column, high above your head?
In this area artist's newest work, we're given a tender and moving homage to ordinary women. This gifted and broadly experienced sculptor, whose work generally tries to come to terms with some of the issues of our day, deserves a salute, and your ongoing attention.
Maksymowicz is onto something here about the lost potential of women who are out of reach and almost out of sight, with no way to climb off their pedestals. We respond with a nod of recognition.”

New Collaborative Opportunity for WCA members!!!

A message from Exhibitions coordinator Ellie Brown:

Hello members,
I am putting together a collaborative show between WCA members and under-served girls. The show will involve sort of "call and response" accordion books made between a member and a participating girl. The theme is "What They Taught Us", meaning the girls would have as much to teach us as we have to teach them.
I want to arrange a one day book making workshop where we pair members with the girls at the YMCA (1400 N. Broad St. 19121). There may be opportunity for continuation, but that is unclear to me at this point. At this moment I need to establish two crucial pieces of information so that we can put up a flier there by next Sunday.

1. Who wants to participate? Book making experience is not required, but appreciated.
2. WHEN???? Wednesdays and Sundays are not possible. Would after school, evening or a Saturday work best for members? I am going to suggest either something like a Tuesday evening, Thursday afterschool or Saturday afternoon.
This would probably be a three-four hour block. We should look at a solid date at the end of March or in April. Please let me know at ellie@elliebrown asap if you want to participate.

Did I mention this work will be exhibited at the main Public Library in the print department in September?Yes, it's great.
Thanks,Ellie

Ok members, if you are interested please contact ellie@elliebrown.com and cc: phila-wca@yahoo.com to help us keep track of participants. Tell her when you would be most available to participate!

The One Book, One Philadelphia Selection Committee has chosen Marjane Satrapi’s The Complete Persepolis as the featured selection for 2010. Originally published in France in two volumes, The Complete Persepolis is Satrapi’s poignant, humorous, and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during a time of political revolution and repression. An outspoken and imaginative child, Satrapi grappled with understanding the ruling power in her country as she witnessed the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the Islamic Revolution’s triumph, and the chilling impact of war with Iraq. Detailed in black-and-white graphic images and accompanied by brief text, Satrapi’s story continues through her years as a young adult, as she finds her way as an expatriate student in Austria. Her first-person point of view presents readers with a unique glimpse into Iran’s political repression, the inner-workings of a family, and one woman’s experience as an outsider both at home and abroad.
One Book, One Philadelphia is a joint project of the Mayor’s Office and the Free Library of Philadelphia that promotes reading, literacy, library use, and community building by motivating tens of thousands of people to read an annual featured selection. Marking the eighth consecutive year for One Book, the 2010 program runs from January 20 to March 17, 2010.

Hundreds of community partners have contributed resources and will be developing programs to facilitate the success of One Book, One Philadelphia. We thank our sponsors and partners for their tremendous support.

To further enhance your One Book, One Philadelphia experience, please browse this site—you’ll find everything from maps and timeline of recent Iranian history to book discussion questions and lists of related book in the Library’s collection. We hope these materials will enrich the time you spend with The Complete Persepolis and its themes, as well as foster a shared, interactive experience with others in the community.

Opportunity: Allen's Lane Art Center Fundraiser (Deadline 2/19)

Artists from throughout the region are invited to donate a single work of art (unframed) on a standard letter sized piece of paper (8 1/2" x 11") to Allens Lane Art Center to be in this exhibition. All works sold will go to directly benefit the programs and events at Allens Lane Art Center.

All donated works will be exhibited in the gallery and will be for sale for just $50 each. Artworks can be any medium and content. Young Women's Caucus Apron Show Opens Featuring WCA-Philadelphia members

WCA-Philadelphia Ellen Bonett's wonderful black and white family history apron is visible in this image.

The exhibit, organized by the Finlandia Young Women’s Caucus (YWC), is titled “The Apron Show.” It is centered on the idea that aprons have a long history of association with women. The YWC and the Reflection Gallery hope the exhibit will prompt viewers to reflect on their own personal history and memories associated with aprons – and the women in their lives who wore them.

The exhibition includes aprons made by individuals in Canada, England, New Jersey, San Francisco, Chicago, and several other states. Many local artists created handmade aprons, including local fiber artist and Finlandia University art and design associate professor Phyllis Fredendall. Fredendall says her apron entry was created while she completed a recent residency at the Felt Center in Petäjävesi, Finland. She says, “the apron represents for me all of the wonderful experiences I have had in the far north.”

YWC president and Finlandia art and design junior Laura Lakanen states that, “in the world in which our mothers and grandmothers grew up, the universal expectations included getting married, bearing children, and cooking, cleaning, and ironing – in an apron. Because these pre-1970s women fought to give the women they bore (us) more choices, we are free to reinterpret the symbol of the apron as we see fit.”

Lakanen continues that while in the most simple terms, an apron is defined as a protective garment worn to keep clothing clean, by creating this exhibition of aprons, individuals were invited to express their own interpretations of what “the apron” means.
She hopes that the exhibit pieces will spur viewer reflection and discussion about women’s issues in a creative and fun way, and encourage a dialogue through which we can more fully understand and appreciate where we came from and what may be ahead.

This show is especially important to Reflection Gallery staff because gallery curator Jaimianne Ammicucci is an officer of the YWC, and gallery director Amanda Moyer is an active member of the organization. Ammicucci and Moyer explain, “We are very excited about the YWC’s first exhibition and we hope to see all of you there to support this great show. You will see aprons made by Finlandia University faculty and students, community artists, and individuals from other states. This is an exhibition you do not want to miss!”

Following its exhibition at the Reflection Gallery, “The Apron Show” will travel to St. Louis (Missouri) Community College, the University of Wisconsin, and other states.

The Young Women’s Caucus is an internal caucus of the National Women’s Caucus for Art. The YWC, started at Finlandia University, is committed to providing resources, opportunities, and support to young women artists. Through art and community involvement, the YWC seeks to remind women of how powerful and influential they really are. Visit the Young Women’s Caucus blog at http://youngwc.blogspot.com.

The Reflection Gallery is located on the second level of Finlandia’s Jutila Center campus, 200 Michigan St., Hancock.
For additional information, please contact Yueh-mei Cheng, Finlandia University associate professor of studio arts, at 906-487-7375 or yueh-mei.cheng@finlandia.edu.

Open call for women photographers

PROSPECTUS
12 12 Gallery announces an open call to all women artists working with any photographic process to submit entries for its Women's International Juried Photography Exhibition 2010.  The exhibition judge and selector, Margaret Salisbury, Fellow, The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, Bath England, will award up to $1000 in cash prizes.  This exhibition will coincide with a state-wide effort to recognize women artists - MINDS WIDE OPEN:  Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts. Although the project is limited to exhibitions and events in the Commonwealth of Virginia, participating artists may be working in any part of the world.
ELIGIBILITY
Women photographers age 18+, working in any photographic process, may submit up to 3 images. Additional images may be submitted at additional cost for up to a total of 5 works.  Work previously exhibited at 12 12 Gallery is not eligible.  Only 2-D work is eligible and must be limited to a maximum framed size of 24" wide.
JURY PROCESS
To assure the finest quality exhibition, the work will be selected based on a dual review process.  Digital images will be reviewed by exhibition judge and selector, Margaret Salisbury, FRPS.  Actual prints will be reviewed by gallery director, Martin McFadden, LRPS.  The exhibition of approximately fifty (50) works will pass both reviewers standards.

ENTRY PROCEDURE Entrants are asked to submit digital images on CD AND corresponding preview prints.  Slides may be submitted for an additional fee of $2.50 (US) per slide, since a digital image is required for the juror to review.  Only one image may be submitted for each work.

Preparing Digital Files.  Composition and artistic merit will be evaluated by high resolution digital images.  Generate a digital file of each image at a resolution of 300 ppi, with the longest dimension being 1900 pixels.  Save the file in JPG format, at the maximum quality level, where the final image size is no larger than 2MB. Label each file with the last name, first initial, and the numbercorresponding to the entry number (e.g.  SmithJ1). Please identify images on the entry form with the title of the work.

Preparing Preview Prints.  Print quality will be evaluated by preview prints that may range in size (in inches) from 8X10 to 12X16.  Only prints smaller than 8X10 may be submitted if they are the actual size of the work.  Furthermore, if the preview print is the actual size of the work to be presented and is selected for the exhibition, the artist may elect to send the specified framing for the print, instead of sending another print.  12 12 Gallery will then mat and frame the selected work with the framing provided by the artist.  12 12 Gallery can produce preview prints from submitted digital files. Contact the gallery for pricing; charges should be added to the entry fee.  Preview prints printed by 12 12 Gallery will be sent to you after the jury process is complete.

Mailed or Hand-Delivered Entries.  CD, prints, completed entry form, entry fee, and SASE (for return of CD, preview prints and notification) must be postmarked byFriday, March 5, 2010 and sent to 12 12 Gallery, 12 East 12th Street, Richmond, Virginia, 23224.

Online Entries.  In the body of an e-mail, include your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address.  In this e-mail, please provide file title, work title, medium, framed work size, and sales price for each image you wish to submit.  To this e-mail you will attach the images of the work that correspond to this information.  Send e-mail to wijpe2010@gmail.com.  NOTE: Preview prints will have to be mailed or printed by 12 12 gallery for online entries.

Entry Fee and Payment.  Each entrant is required to pay a non-refundable $25 (US) entry fee for 3 images. Additional images, at $5 (US) each, for up to 5 total images, may be submitted.  Slides may by submitted for an extra $2.50 (US) for each image and the gallery will generate the digital image.  Payment of entry fee will be accepted via PayPal (1212galleryrichmond@gmail.com), personal check (US only), or money order (including international money orders in US dollars) mailed to the gallery by the postmark deadline of Friday, March 5, 2010.

Other Conditions.  Entry forms may be photocopied.  Incomplete entries or unlabeled slides will not be considered.  Please note that images of accepted work may be retained for publicity purposes and will be returned after the exhibition closes.  Entries will not be returned without SASE and adequate postage.  Artists will be notified of acceptance by e-mail.  If an e-mail address is not available an SASE for notification must be provided.  Artist statements, bios, and resumes may be requested upon acceptance to the exhibition.
