Opportunity: San Diego WCA

San Diego Women’s Caucus for Art is launching an on-line gallery and exhibition space.

In a refreshing departure from traditional gallery operations, artists will not have to play the who-knows-who, elitist game to be featured in this gallery. They will be selected for their talent. Our online art gallery will be dedicated to helping contemporary artists display their original art while making it easier for the public to find them. The public can use the online gallery to search or browse for original art, then contact the artists or their galleries. We simply highlight the artists and their art. We provide a way to find art, artists, and galleries and help artists promote their contemporary art.

All WCA members are invited to participate in juried and non-juried exhibitions. The SDWCA juried show website is directly linked to our WCA chapter website.
Here is the theme of our first on-line juried show
GOING GREEN - SUMMER 2010

The exhibition objective is to present a collection of work that uses organic, natural, sustainable. recycled materials, non-toxic materials or digital methods. It is hoped that the works will educate the audience about environmental crises; art that informs and interprets natural processes; art that reinvents or reclaims natural found articles; and art that celebrates our emotional and physical connection to the earth. Ultimately, the juror seeks visually compelling creations that educate, enlighten, and inspire stewardship of the earth.

Mollie Kellogg, local artist will be our juror. Mollie studied art in Colorado starting her career in graphic design and illustration. In 1992, she co-founded Planet Earth Multi-Cultural Theatre and Gallery in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2002, Mollie moved from Seattle, Washington to San Diego, California where she is working full-time as an artist. Mollie will be looking for art that incorporates natural processes; art that reinvents or reclaims natural found articles; and art that celebrates our emotional and physical connection to the earth. Ultimately, she seeks visually compelling creations that educate, enlighten, and inspire stewardship of the earth.

Opportunity: FLUXMUSEUM

FLUXMUSEUM spends est. $2.5 Billion in Taxpayer Money to Exhibit in Space.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To boldly go where no museum has gone before, the Fluxmuseum, on the whim of artist Gary Bibb, begins a global initiative to invite artists from around the world to participate in, what may well be, the most expensive exhibition ever mounted. The Exhibition: Fluxface in Space, using the last shuttles in the Nasa Space Shuttle Program will be launched into orbit this fall.
Using the Face In Space Program from NASA - we are organizing a "Fluxface in Space" exhibition to be launched into orbit on the last two Space Shuttles! Artists are to create one original postcard sized work of art in any media (preferably collage/ photo-montage) with the themes of Space Exploration & the Arts, the Shuttle Program, Outerspace, Rockets, Astronauts, Astronomy etc . This will be a commemorative project around the fact that the Space Shuttle program is coming to an end after these last two flights.
Of course the Fluxmuseum is not actually spending any taxpayer money. This money will be or has been spent by NASA without our help. We're just using a little digital space on the shuttle computers.
CALL FOR WORKS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What to do:
Create a work of art 4x6 inches in size on paper about Space Exploration, Astronomy, the Universe etc. with the words - Fluxface in Space, for a Fluxmuseum exhibition. In addition, 1) jpg. photo of the art 2) one jpg. photo of you holding the art - same size as the art, 4x6. NOTE: see the helpful hints below for guidance.
Register and upload the photo of you holding (or with) the artwork to NASA: http://faceinspace.nasa.gov/
ONCE REGISTERED include the NASA conformation number on back of the artwork and photograph along with the Space Shuttle mission number, artist name, country, website and/or email address.
Email jpg. (4" x 6" 180 dpi - max) images of the artwork and the photo along with your name, country and Shuttle mission # for the online exhibition to: angellaferrara@gmail.com
You also have the opportuniity to submit a statement related to space exploration and the arts - not required but appreciated. (250 word maximum). Please email with the images for the web exhibition.

DEADLINE TO UPLOAD PHOTO (of you with the art) TO NASA: AUGUST 1, 2010 -
http://faceinspace.nasa.gov/
NOTE: see the helpful hints below for guidance.

DEADLINE TO EMAIL IMAGES OF ARTWORK AND PHOTO TO WEBSITE: AUGUST 1, 2010 - angellaferrara@gmail.com

DEADLINE TO SEND ARTWORK AND PHOTO TO FLUXMUSEUM: AUGUST 31, 2010

Deadlines will be enforced - so don't delay. The artwork must have embedded somewhere in the image, or on the front of the card, the words "Fluxface in Space". PLEASE NOTE - the Fluxmusem will only accept one entry per artist. Complinance to all the guidelines listed are required to be included in the Fluxface in Space exhibitions, publications and museum archive.

Helpful Hints:

The self portrait photo w/ art - try to position your artwork somewhat close to your face in the photo. That way your face and the art will be uploaded. NASA will have you crop the photo to about 3"x3" on the website using their program. It's easy.

Printing the conformation - once you have uploaded your photo, you will see a Shuttle lift-off, then a conformation page will pop-up. I suggest you write down the information from this page - the mission number and conformation number in case you have problems printing, that way you will have the info.

To print:
1) click on print this page
2) expand the new screen to see the print this page - click on prompt
3) the print window opens - the document is posted as Microsoft xps doc. writer in the printer type menu
4) sort thru the menu - select your printer type
5) click ok - it should print
6) NASA does have a helpful FAQ section on their site if you have problems.

Send the artwork and a 4x6 copy of the photo of you with the artwork to:

Fluxface in Space
6955 Pinon Street
Fort Worth, TX 76116
USA

The online exhibition will be featured at: http://fluxfaceinspace.blogspot.com
We are pleased to announce that Angela Ferrara, Curator of the ABAD exhibition at MUBE - Sao Paulo, Brazil, will be the primary image archivist for the online exhibit.

An exhibition (or multiple exhibitions) will be arranged and a catalog published using the art, photos and statements. The catalog will be available for purchase once the Fluxface in Space collection has been compiled.

The Fluxmuseum may request a copy of the space flight certificate for the archive. All participants will aquire the certificate from NASA after the Space Shuttle has returned from the mission. (See the faceinspace.nasa.gov website for details).

Thank you to all participants!

Member News: Ellen Bonett

Secretary Ellen Bonett is part of the annual Midwives Collective Members Show, "REDefined."

6-10 p.m.
Midwives Collective Gallery
1241 Carpenter Street
Philadelphia, PA

From the Midwives Collective:
"This show is like no other because we decided to create our works around a theme and thus we chose "red". Whether the focus is on the color (or the absence of it), an emotion, a synonym or however the word is interpreted; this is one show that will truly define who the Midwives are. We all rigorously explored the depths of our artistic limits by challenging ourselves to present our works in the forms of painting, instillation (both mirrored and fabric design), sumi e brush painting, printing and photography.

Featured artists: Ellen Bonett, Kelly A. Burkhardt, Carol Deutsch, Sarah Hunt, Christiana Kugel, Cheryl Rybacki, Elizabeth J. Smith

We also have decided to donate a portion of the sale of any of our pieces to the Midwives of Haiti (http://midwivesforhaiti.org/), which is a nonprofit organization that sends nurses and midwives to Haiti to provide a clean and safe environment for pregnant women during the birthing process. We also have created a quilt that is available for purchase and 100% of proceeds will be donated as well.

Phew! I know that's a lot, but we have been brimming with excitement for this show! With that said...

Please join us on Friday, June 11th for the Opening Night Reception from 6pm-10pm.

Gallery hours are every Saturday for the duration of the show from Noon - 5pm. We look forward to seeing you all very soon!

Thank you,
Midwives Collective

School District Art Award!!!

Our June meeting was held last night at the School District Building at 400 North Broad St, where the walls are currently adorned floor to ceiling with artwork by students in Philadelphia Public Schools. For many years now, the Philadelphia WCA has given an award to a deserving 11th grade girl based on the strength of her work. An 11th grader is selected as we hope to encourage a student who may not have made a final decision about continued education to further pursue the arts.
Having our meeting at the School District allowed all of us to contribute our opinions to jurying the award... and for once there was some fierce debate!! As opinions were divided, the final decision was to grant not one... but TWO awards!!!! Above is the work of Iva Hodaj, an 11th grader from George Washington High School. Her image is a pencil perspective drawing of Headhouse Square which is on 2nd St between Pine and Lombard. Her work was chosen for her high level of detail, careful perspective (both compositional and atmospheric), and range of mark, making it a drawing of mastery surprising for a high school student and more on par with perhaps a sophomore in art school.
On the completely opposite side of the the spectrum is the work of Vaux High school student, Tiara Gaymon.
Her exuberant painting on paper brought to mind the work of Basquiat. It was selected for its highly expressive qualities, the range of mark-making, and successful control of multiple layers of color, as well as its potential for multiple interpretations.
The presentation of awards will occur this Saturday, June 12th at 10 am, where we hope to meet our awardees in person. All members and well-wishers are invited to attend, atrium of the school district building, 400 N Broad.

Upcoming Monthly Meeting: June 9th - THIS WEDNESDAY!

The WCA Philadelphia Chapter June 9th meeting will be at The School District of Philadelphia Building at approximately 5:30pm to judge the "Young Artists" exhibition prior to the monthly meeting.

A conference room in The School District of Philadelphia Building was graciously donated for our meeting beginning at 7pm. WCA members are welcome to join in the judging prior to the meeting. However, it is understandable if members can only participate in the monthly meeting.

The address for The School District of Philadelphia Building is:

Just to clarify, the address above is the location of the WCA Wednesday June 9th monthly meeting, not Moore College of Art. The WCA Philadelphia Chapter meetings will resume at Moore College of Art in July.

WCA Strategic Planning Meeting - June 13th at 1pm
All are welcome to join the Strategic Planning Meeting at Virginia’s house on June 13th at 1pm.

We will be discussing upcoming exhibits and opportunities. The more the merrier as we will be interested in ideas for 2011! OUTDOORS AT THE WOODMERE:

VIRGINIA MAKSYMOWICZ, THE THREE GRACES

AS PART OF THE EXHIBITION, "CONSTRUCTED VISIONS"

May 15 - August 22
Reception: Saturday, June 12, 5 - 7pm

"Constructed Visions," highlighting the work of a number of regional artists, is intended to encourage critical debate regarding the position of sculpture, its function and production. Curated by Paul Hubbard, the artists selected have in common the choice to build works as a way of directly expressing their interests, ideas and concepts. At a time when sculpture has the ability to encompass a diverse range of activities and is constantly reinventing itself, this exhibit seeks to embrace the challenging.

Artists: Chakaia Booker, Paul Hubbard, Virginia Maksymowicz, Creighton Michael, Joe Mooney, James Rosenthal, Christoph Spath and Scot White.
