Member News: Molly Crowley, Contemporary Art of Afghanistan

Opening Reception February 4, 6:30-9pm

Twelve Gates Art Gallery
305 Cherry Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106

Doors open at 6pm.

Twelve Gates Gallery presents Contemporary and Modern Afghan artists in collaboration with 'Chelcherogh Art Organization' and 'Afghan Education for a Better Tomorrow'. Works include contemporary calligraphy of Dari Persian verse by master calligrapher Abdul Hakim Karimzada, intricate Arabesque patterns done in watercolor and pastels by Khoshbakht Herawi. Also included are watercolors of Afghan cityscapes by Rashed Rahmani and Persian miniatures by Nasser Sawabi and Younis among other artists.

This exhibition coincides with "Popular Culture and Alternative Histories: Voices from Beyond the Security State in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Central Asia" Conference held at University of Pennsylvania on February 18 and 19, co-sponsored by Twelve Gates Art Gallery.

From Molly:

Friday February 4th at the 12 Gates Gallery, Philadelphia's premier gallery for South East Asian art, will be hosting a show featuring modern paintings, calligraphy and embroidery from Afghan artists who have never shown in the United States before!

This show has taken months of coordination between 12 Gates Gallery, Rameen Javid and Chelcherogh Arts in Afghanistan, Maryam Ufyani, Justin Agnew and myself. Most of the art will be for sale. The majority of the artists have trained at Herat University's Fine Arts department. The work includes, calligraphy (in Pashto), watercolors, miniatures, painting and will be the first showing of the Sanja Amaj Tapestry, created through Rubia's programs in Kabul.

I had only seen photos of the works up until today when Justin and I met with Aisha at the Gallery yesterday, to work out the hanging details and dates. The pieces are amazing, beautiful, and it will be entirely worth it for you to stop by and at least take a look.

So please come out and see some amazing work from artists who normally would not have the opportunity to show in the US. It could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The proceeds from any art purchased go to the artist and all transactions will go through the Afghan Embassy and Rameen Javid

Check out 12 Gates Gallery at http://twelvegatesgallery.com/ and their Facebook page

Also check out Rameen Javid’s “Afghan Communicator” photo gallery for past exhibitions, gallery shows, and other events.

Artist’s Biography

Virginia Maksymowicz (b. 1952, New York City) is a sculptor currently living in Philadelphia. PA. In 1973, she received a B.A. in Fine Arts from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and an M.F.A. in Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego. She has exhibited her work at the Franklin Furnace, Alternative Museum, the Elizabeth Foundation and Grey Gallery in New York City; the Michener and Woodmere museums in Philadelphia; and college, university and nonprofit galleries throughout the U.S. and abroad.

She is a past recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in sculpture (1984), and over the years has been honored with numerous other grants and awards. Her artwork has been reviewed in Sculpture Magazine, The New York Times, New York Newsday, The New Art Examiner and The Philadelphia Inquirer. Her series, The History of Art, appears on the cover of The Female Body, published by the University of Michigan Press
in 1991.

She has been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome (2006), an artist-in-residence at the Powel House Museum in Philadelphia (2006- 2007), and a fellow at the Vermont Studio Center (2007).

Maksymowicz has been a visiting professor of art at a variety of colleges and universities throughout the United States including Oberlin College in Ohio, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. She is currently Associate Professor of Art at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

For nearly 35 years, Maksymowicz has been developing a type of imagery that addresses cultural and political issues in a nontraditional, but understandable, form. A hybrid of sculpture and painting, the work is usually displayed as wall relief, with figures or objects sometimes juxtaposed with narrative texts. Maksymowicz has a particular interest in feminist issues and she often focuses on the particular circumstances of a range of women, both in past history and in current times.

Call for Art: Image of the Dreamers

***Special Exhibition***
Making HerStory 6
Call for Entrants:
“Image of the Dreamers”
Baltimore, MD

The Art with Joe Series at Peace & a Cup of Joe Café, with the Thickart Collaborative, in
conjunction with “Making HerStory 6: the era of our dreams,” presents “Image of the Dream
Makers,” a pictorial celebration of women in the arts.

Making HerStory celebrates the vast and diverse forms of creativity offered by women artists.
This year’s focus is found in a renewed energy among many of the artists in the Making
HerStory family. HerStory 6 is about collaboration, growth, and sustainability. “Image of the
Dream Makers,” celebrates the women artists who contribute to the fabric of our history through
their creativity. This exhibition is unique in that it celebrates women in all forms of art—not
just those who create 2-D work. Its focus is on the women who create the art, not just the art
itself. Women artists will be celebrated from all genres in this exhibition: visual art, literary
arts, culinary arts, music arts (signer, songwriter, producer, etc), theater arts (playwright, actress,
director, light tech, etc), and the list goes on and on. If this call reaches you and you think you’re
an artist, you probably are.

We are seeking electronic submissions of individual “self-portraits.” Self-portraits can be
traditional self-portraiture, images taken by another, or a graphic. Images should be submitted in
JPEG format, preferably 300dpi. Portraits should date no further back than 2009.

Exhibition Dates
Exhibition dates are March 4 – April 16, 2011. As part of “Making HerStory,” there will be a
Tea to celebrate this exhibition on Saturday April 2, 2011 at Peace & a Cup of Joe.

Entry Details
Interested participants shall submit an expression of interest of up to three (3) JPEGs (a
resolution of at least 300 dpi prefered) of Portraits to herstory@thickart.com. The curator will
select one image for use in the exhibition. Entrant should also fill out and return the attached
form with biographical data. There is NO FEE to participate in this celebration. Portraits are for
exhibition purposes only and will not be for sale.

Deadline
Expressions of interest must be received by February 11, 2011 to be considered. However,
early entry is encouraged.

For Additional Information:
Contact Michelle d. Parrish at mik@thickart.com.

Opportunity: Mentor Program in Wilmington, DE

Call for participation:

In keeping with our mission of community outreach and education, our chapter has an opportunity to work on a collaborative book project with second- though seventh-grade students in the Ujima afterschool program in Wilmington Delaware.

Workshops for writing and art demonstrations will take place on Fridays from 4-5 pm. (Dates to be determined, but likely starting mid-late Feb.)This project will run for six weeks, with writing activities and art activities on alternating weeks. Each student will create a book, and paired with a chapter member, explore their identity through words and imagery. Chapter members can contribute by becoming an "art-pal"(as opposed to penpal), either in person at the Friday workshops or via trading of books - drop-offs and pick-ups will be arranged through Alison Altergott - or by conducting an art demonstration. Art techniques to be considered can include printmaking, collage, photography - any 2-d methods are welcome.

We anticipate as many as twenty students taking part in this project, so we hope every chapter member will consider being an art-pal, so all the children will have a partner. This is a great chance for us to share our involvement with art as adults - most often art is not taken seriously as a career, but children are great artists, and they should be able to see art as something they can keep in their grown-up lives.

Please respond as soon as possible if you can participate, and in what way you can contribute.

There may be exhibition opportunities for this project as well.

Member Exhibition: Battle of the Sexes Upcoming at Delaware Art Museum

Follow this link to read about our upcoming Women's Caucus for Art Philadelphia Chapter exhibit, Battle of the Sexes on the Delaware Art Museum website:

Battle of the Sexes

March 5, 2011 – May 22, 2011

Organized as a participatory experience by The Philadelphia Women’s Caucus for Art, Battle of the Sexes presents works by women artists, each of whom has invited a male artist to exhibit with her. Artists’ names will not appear on labels identifying the works. Visitors will receive ballots, on which they may vote on whether each work was created by a female or male artist. During the penultimate week of the exhibition, the results will be tallied and posted, along with the names and genders of the artists. Results will also be published on the Philadelphia-WCA blog, and emailed to voters who request the results on their ballots. In accord with The Women’s Caucus for Art’s mission to create community through art, education, and social activism, Battle of the Sexes will have you looking, thinking, talking, voting, and coming back to see the mysteries revealed.

Press Clipping:

We had a mention from Ed Sozanski (Inquirer & their online version):
"Battle of the Sexes. The Philadelphia Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art wants to know if you can distinguish between art made by men and art made by women. At this Delaware Art Museum exhibition, visitors can vote on works presented without names. The "participatory experience" runs March 5 through May 22. (302-571-9590 or www.delart.org)"

The Cross Cultural Collaborative at the ABA HOUSE in Nungua, Ghana is lead by the remarkable artist Ellie Schimelman.

Ellie Schimelman's background is as a potter and an educator. Over 20 years ago she started traveling to Ghana, looking for inspiration as an artist. Enamored by the country, its people and its arts in 1994 she formed Aba Tours and started taking others.

In 2002 Ellie started an educational non-profit called Cross Cultural Collaborative, Inc. to promote cultural exchange and understanding through the arts. People from around the world come to ABA HOUSE, in Nungua, Ghana, to interact with African artists. Artists live and work together in an environment where they can exchange ideas and find universal connections.

The ABA HOUSE leads children in the exploration of their creative self. The children produce beautiful pieces of artwork including blank journal, wall hanging pieces and stationary. Much of the work is made on hand made papers. These works will be on sale at this exhibit and all funds will go to the Cross Cultural Collaborative.

Call for Artists for PENDULUM
CAll FOR ARTISTS:

PENDULUM
Show runs from March 11, 2011 - April 9, 2011
Opening Reception on Friday, March 11, 2011

A pendulum is more than a physical object in continual motion propelled by equal force to swing back and forth from a fixed point. It's a consciousness, a state of mind that now more than ever describes the atmosphere of the United States. We as Americans are continually oscillating between fear and bravery, candor and deception, discrimination and embrace. We're fluctuating outside of our comfort zone. The Midwives Collective and Gallery invites you to participate in the unique and timely show "Pendulum." Whether it applies to political agendas, the global economy and environment, or to our personal modus operandi, the pendulum guides us to explore how and why the ground shifts beneath our feet.
Art work for this exhibit can be in any form. Please drop off a CD containing the image of your work, the size specifications and contact information (phone number and email.) All mediums accepted.

IMPORTANT DATES:
Submission drop-off dates are Tuesday, February 15th from 7-9pm and Saturday, February 19th from Noon - 4pm both at the Midwives Collective and Gallery: 1241 Carpenter Street, Suite 2, 2nd Floor.

If accepted, the submission fee will be $10/piece. We will be notified you via email by Monday, February 21st.

Final artwork drop-off date with the $10/piece fee is Saturday, March 5th from Noon - 4pm. If you have a conflict, please contact us @ themwc@gmail.com to coordinate a time.

Opening night for the exhibit is Friday, March 11, 2011 and the show will run until April 9, 2011.

Handmade Philly member, Jen McCleary (jenmccleary.com) —a mixed media/graphic artist whose work includes digital imagery fashioned into collage and jewelry—developed the concept behind the “Book Exchange” after working with an artist-friend on an altered book project. “Working collaboratively taught me a lot,” McCleary recalls. “[The project] helped me let go and work more intuitively.”

McCleary proposed a similar project, incorporating a larger pool of artists, to the Handmade Philly group. By April of 2010, 16 Handmade Philly artists signed on and two “Book Exchange” groups were formed. Each member began with a “book,”—made, bought or found and as loosely defined as a stack of index cards bound together by their box. The artists would create the first alteration, and then mail it off to the next group member, who would incorporate their own artistic perspective before sending it off again.

By November, all books had been returned to their original proprietor. “I had forgotten what [my book] looked like, it had been gone for such a long time,” McCleary admits.

The altered books reflect the range and diversity of talents in Handmade Philly, often incorporating multiple mediums within a single page. Check out handmadephillybookexchange.blogspot.com and you’ll see a range including collage, painting, fabric weaving, found objects, mementos and photographs, pieced and bound together in a series of distinct artistic narratives. My personal favorites include a button-zipper-fabric-and thread collage found in the book of Celia De La Cruz, an accordion-fold “purse” book unraveling into multiple single-wrapped pieces, and a resurfacing of antiquated (thank you GPS) roadmaps.

The books will be on interactive display and audience members are encouraged to hold, touch and experience their contents. “Usually an art exhibit is, ‘Stand back and don’t touch,’” McCleary points out. “We want these books to be accessible to the public—a hands-on exhibit.

Live Performances and Films by the Young Women's Caucus Members

1) "on our own volition" featuring:

Artists: Amanda Moyer, J.R. DeMers, Susie Danielson, Stephanie Trevino, Amanda Mears, Dawn Hiltz

Description: Women have traditionally gathered to discuss their desires, their passions, changes they want in the world, and their lives. Women have congregated around watering holes, in kitchens, in bathrooms, over quilts, and at tea tables, just to name a few. Six ladies from Finlandia University will be gathering together in the Raandesk Gallery to discuss their wants and desires for their lives and the world through narrative movement and sound.

2)."Spoken For"

Artists: Marina Kelly and Megan Katz with performers Michael Eckblad and Andrew Dayton of the Notion Collective

Spoken For features women's intimate stories of want, using live performance and video in a multi-media exploration of women's desires as expressed via male voices.

3). "Requesting Access"

Description: Requesting Access is collaborative photo shoot performance by Chanel Matsunami Govreau (played by Asian Barbie), photographer Martin Solheim and makeup/hair artist Tamara Qabazard. This performance layers the exaggeration of cultural costuming over questionably (un)real storytelling. This is combined with the friction and vanity of flash photography to explore multiracial identity and gender in interracial relationships as it combines with expectations of sexuality and its possible profit.

4) Title: 45th Presidency by Alex Dilks Pandola and Green Light Arts (Philadelphia)

Description: It's January 20th, 2013 and you're invited to the inauguration of the 45th President of The United States of American, America's first woman President, Sarah Louise Palin. If you don't think it can happen, please see the 44th President. Is this the last thing women want? What women? Join Green Light Arts as we listen to President Palin's Inaugural Speech and see how she intends to turn the Mama Grizzlies loose on Washington. Keep your car doors locked!

5) Title: Trading Flowers for Love Stories
Artist: Amanda Lovelee

Free wild flower (photo) for your love story. I have gathered images of wild, uncultivated plants. I would like to trade a photograph for a hand written love story. Simply show up write down your story and then you can pick any picture. You can keep it anonymous or you can include names, dates, times, locations. The stories will be gathered and compiled to form an archive, a historical record, and a book. You will receive the link to the print on demand book if you would like a copy.
