Michelle Wilson on Battle of the Sexes

Three years ago, I wrote a proposal for the Delaware Art Museum, proposing an exhibition for the Philadelphia Women's Caucus for Art. It was an idea I'd had for a number of years, a participatory exhibition of women and men in which no names were displayed, and the public was asked to vote on whether or not they felt the works of art were created by men or by women.

And by a stroke of luck (of maybe it was just a good idea!) the proposal was accepted. So this past spring, the exhibition took place. I was fortunate enough to be back in Philly (more on that later) for the closing reception and big reveal.

As you can see below, only 42% of voters felt my work was made by a woman. Most of the artists participating wanted to make it a little difficult for the voting, case in point, several men who entered work featuring the color pink. Stereotypes clearly still exist, because the public decided that pink art had to be made by us ladies. Tech-based works and video were deemed male, and printmaking was pretty ambiguous....

some things looming Fiber Arts Gallery Announces
“Call for Artists” for Salon-style “Felt So Good” Show

Deadline is July 30, 2011; the Exhibition of original, one-of-a-kind art
will run from September 10 to November 5, 2011

Reading, Pa—The some things looming (www.somethingslooming.com) Fiber Arts Gallery and Studio, 526 Washington Street, Reading, has issued a “Call for Artists” to submit works for its next salon-style exhibition, “Felt So Good,” featuring one of the oldest forms of textile craft in the history of mankind; felting predates spinning, weaving, and knitting.

The gallery’s latest show is expected to again attract an array of original, one-of-a-kind works from artists worldwide. The show will run from Sept. 10 to Nov. 5, 2011. The entry deadline is July 30, 2011. Selection notices will be mailed by Aug. 13, 2011.

Gallery co-director Melanie Mitchell said, “Felt, a non-woven cloth, is produced by matting and pressing animal fibers until they form together through a process called wet felting. Needle felting is a variation of the wet felting process, using a special needle tool instead of wetting the wool and using friction to bind the fibers.

“Today, felt is still widely used to create wearable and functional pieces, but it is also used to create art in the form of wall hangings, sculpture, installation pieces, home décor, whatever the imagination can design! Artists are challenged to create works that are either entirely created with felt or contain incorporated felted components.”

Entrants can download a pdf entry form at www.somethingslooming.com/feltsogood_prospectus.pdf . Or send an e-mail to mmitchell@somethingslooming.com or call 610-373-7337.

This second some things looming juried invitational show follows in the footsteps of its highly successful “Simply Irresistible” and the current “Size Matters” which runs through June 25, 2011.

Rebekah Ritter, gallery founder and co-director, said all work must be original, one-of-a-kind and created within the last three years. “Artists may submit a maximum of three pieces and a maximum of six high resolution (300 dpi) images–three full and three detail of each piece—on a CD, labeled and in correct orientation.

“Due to space limitations, 2-D work must be no larger than 40” x 40” and 3-D work on pedestals can be no larger than 18” x 18” x 18.” Freestanding works are acceptable,” continued Ritter. “Our entry fee is again only $25 and all entries must be postmarked by July 30, 2011.

Some things looming contains a gallery, boutique, studio units, community studios, classrooms, networking resources and a library. Frequent Saturday “sampler’ classes are offered covering the basics of the fiber and textile arts. The gallery is open Tues. and Weds. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sats. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Off-street parking is available at the nearby Wyndham Hotel, 5th and Washington streets, and other city public parking garages.

The mission of some things looming is to create a thriving, viable community for the fiber arts and artists in Berks County and beyond.

Member News: Art in the Open

Ellen Bonett

Congratulations to our members who were selected to participate in Art in the Open! Click on their names to read more about their projects!

Art in the Open (AiO) brings the action and intrigue of artists making their art directly to Philadelphia's Schuylkill riverbanks for four days in June. Here, free to all audiences, selected artists work with brushes, cameras, sewing machines, pens, and hammers, to respond to this historic and environmentally unique local setting. The public is invited to walk among the artists and observe their process of creation and craft up close. Park visitors can also make their own art at select locations along the riverbank path and join in related events offered by a wide partnership of the city's cultural organizations.

AiO celebrates the Philadelphia landscape as both inspiration and as an open-air studio for artists. Over the days of June 9 to 12, 2011, from Fairmount Water Works to Bartram's Garden, AiO will explore the natural beauty and urban character of the Schuylkill River: where West Philadelphia separates from Center City and thousands of people enjoy a beloved recreational park of paths and views.

The Big Reveal! Battle of the Sexes Voting Results

The votes have been tallied! Exactly half the artists' work were voted as being made by the opposite sex. The percentages listed above show the percentage of voters who guessed correctly. Percentage above 50% were correct, below 50% were incorrect. Percentage between 40%-60% could be considered more gender ambiguous, and about half the artists fall in the ambiguity zone. Percentages above 70% reflect the artist was working stongly within visual or material gender traditions, and only about a quarter of the artists fall in this zone. Percentages below 40% show the artist was perhaps subverting gender stereotypes and really fooled the viewers.

Patrick Burgoyne's felted and beaded mandalas really threw viewers, and received the most incorrect votes. See everybody? Men can be fiber artists too!!!

Nicole Dul's Los Ramblas print was deemed the most "masculine" of the women artists work. Why? Because it's all blue? Because it's a print?
Color was definitely a determining factor in viewer's perceptions. All of the men's work that was voted more "feminine" contained the color pink or other warm color. All but one female printmaker was considered more "masculine", and the "masculine"-voted women artist's work contained cooler colors.
Surprisingly, most of the sculpture in the exhibit was voted as feminine. Paintings were ambiguous to the viewers, and depended most on subject matter.  Work involving technology, like video, photography, or digital imagery was voted as masculine. The fact that so much of the work was ambiguous in gender is a positive result and shows how artists are breaking down gender stereotypes. The fact that color (pink and blue!) and media (Fiber and technology!) were voted so overwhelmingly as one or the other gender reveals that viewers do project gender stereotypes when viewing artwork.
It's not too late to see the show! You still have until May22 to visit.

Battle of the Sexes: May 8 at the Delaware Art Museum

Organized as a participatory experience by The Philadelphia Women’s Caucus for Art, Battle of the Sexes presents works by women artists, each of whom has invited a male artist to exhibit with her. Artists’ names will not appear on labels identifying the works. Visitors will receive ballots, on which they may vote on whether each work was created by a female or male artist. The results will be tallied and posted on this website on May 7th, along with the names and genders of the artists. Results will also be published on the Philadelphia-WCA blog, and emailed to voters who request the results on their ballots. In accord with The Women’s Caucus for Art’s mission to create community through art, education, and social activism, Battle of the Sexes will have you looking, thinking, talking, voting, and coming back to see the mysteries revealed.

Battle of the Sexes features the following pairs of artists:

C. Back & B. Tobia

Opportunity: Call for Artists (Deadline 7/30)

Tyme Gallery is calling for artists for their 14th Annual Juried Exhibition, “Inner Essence”. All fine art including relief and photography are eligible for entry. Last year’s entries included artists from the tri-state area. First prize is a solo exhibition in January at Tyme Gallery.

Jurors this year include award winning artists Steve Oliver, Lois Allen Charles, Alice Dustin and Nancy Halbert. This collective body of talent is why Tyme Gallery’s juried exhibition is an honored tradition.

Steve Oliver creates wildlife and nature art, which captures each animal's character and personality. Using acrylics, ink or colored pencils, Steve brings each animal to life in vivid colors and meticulous detail, while surrounding them with a captivating and picturesque background or atmosphere. On April 18, 2009, Steve was honored by winning the 2010 Delaware Duck Stamp Competition. His painting of a canvasback was selected from the 47 entries, sent in by artists from all over the country. The image of this painting is now on the 2010 stamp.

Lois Allen Charles is primarily a self-taught artist and has worked in watercolor, acrylics, and pastel on paper and canvas. Her work has been included in many professional shows over the years and won many awards. Charles’ art is also included in many private and public collections in the United States and Europe and has been featured in Victoriana magazine and twice on the cover ofPhiladelphia Stories magazine.

Alice Dustin is an oil painter who delights in color and the way oil paint can be put down with a brush. Leigh Gustafson of Artists' House Gallery of Philadelphia said Dustin's "enthusiasm comes out of her brush stroke. She has a spontaneous...juicy brush stroke." "She's not afraid to paint. With just a few brush strokes, a simple bowl comes alive," says Larry Toro of Toro Gallery in Huntingdon Valley. Alice Dustin is known for her impressionistic style, a natural result of alla prima painting, done in or outdoors reacting to the subject at hand.

Nancy Halbert, director for the Muse Gallery in Philadelphia an artist run cooperative gallery showing contemporary art for over 30 years. Along with her many accomplishments she was honored with a Citation from the City of Philadelphia for her work as Executive Director of the Community Education Center, a cultural and community arts center in West Philadelphia. According to Victoria Donohoe, art critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, “Boredom is foreign to Halbert’s paintings-variation, not repetition, is her rule in dealing with the figure. Several of her finest subjects achieve an independent complexity in their rugged, hearty dignity.”

Entries for this upcoming event will be accepted on Friday, July 29th and Saturday, July 30th, between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The judging takes place on Sunday July 31st. The opening reception is Friday, August 12th from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. The award ceremony takes place promptly at 7:00 PM. The reception is beautifully catered with hors d' oeuvres from Antonella's Italian Kitchen in Rosemont and is free to the public. The artwork is on sale and exhibit from August 12th through Thursday September 1st. For a prospectus on this exciting event emailmadametyme@tymegallery.com or please send a SASE (business size) to Tyme Gallery at 17 W. Eagle Road, Havertown, PA 19083.
