Featured Member Artist: Megan Driscoll

Artist's Statement:
Megan Driscoll is a Philadelphia based artist that works with acrylic, watercolor, marker, and pencil to create atypical spaces and landscapes.  Her paintings intuitively evolve over time with layers of pattern, visible brush strokes, and a vibrant color palette.  She “builds” these curious landscapes by painting bricks or blocks or diamonds to build walls and then breaks through them with contrasting color and pattern.  Often her compositions hurl bricks into space.

Bio:
Megan received her BFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University and her BSN from Thomas Jefferson University’s School of Nursing.  She also received an Arts in Healthcare certificate from the Art and Quality of Life Research Center, Temple University.  Megan is an oncology nurse and a painter who finds connections between her worlds of art and science.

Upcoming exhibits:
"Small Jawns Pt. II"
First Friday December 2, 2011
Part Time Studios, 2031 Frankford Ave, Phila PA

November Meeting Minutes

Ruth leads a sewing machine skill share at Moore
We are currently moving our chapter communications over to a google group from which we'll send out all future minutes.  If you would like
to continue to receive current information from the chapter and are a current member, please send a request to join our google group
http://groups.google.com/group/wca-philadelphia-2012, or email phila_wca@yahoo.com if you have any questions on the process.  The google group will allow us to better communicate with each other and will provide a members only archive of all of our messages so that no one misses out.  We don't want to post everything on Facebook since it's so public.  We know that some of you experienced difficulty with the current yahoo system, and we cannot urge you enough to join the google group.  It is so much better.  It is private and only group members can read your messages.  We will still have phila_wca@yahoo.com as our email address, and all of the messages will be automatically delivered to this mailbox so nothing will be lost in the transition.

We're so thrilled to have you in the chapter.  We have four shows and a film screening planned for 2012, we're participating in a traveling journal project that will be at the February National Convention in Los Angeles (detail on http://nationalwca.org) which we hope you'll attend, and we're getting ready for the holiday party (see below).

If you haven't yet paid your 2012 dues, you can follow the following procedure.
Paying dues:  With this form, http://nationalwca.org/applicants/application.php, you can pay via
paypal or credit card at Nationals.  OR to pay by check directly within the chapter (renewals encouraged), you can print the form and mail directly to our treasurer: http://nationalwca.org/ wcadocs/2012applicationform. pdf
Choose regular ($40) OR student/low income dues ($25) + $15 PAP (Philadelphia Chapter dues) = $55/$40
Choose any of the internal caucuses for free.  Many of our members belong to the Young Women's Caucus:  http://youngwc.weebly.com.  Our Treasurer Virginia will mail you a membership card, and you'll get a letter from Nationals telling you your membership number.

Our holiday party is December 11 from 1-4 at our Secretary, Ellen's where we'll be making Little Dresses for Africa and cards for the A21 Campaign and turning in our traveling journal pages (see below):
http://phila-wca.blogspot.com/2011/11/holiday-party-little-dresses-for-africa.html
Once you RSVP, Ellen will give you directions.

Participate: Traveling Journal Project (exhibited in LA in February 2012):

Make up to three pages, and we'll adhere them.

We've pasted below a call for art from our partner organization, Inliquid.  We've also posted many more art calls through the Google group so please make sure to subscribe to take a look.  We hope to see you at the holiday party, and we wish you a terrific Thanksgiving.

Holiday Party: Little Dresses for Africa and Cards for the A21 Campaign

1) Please bring a food or drink item (comment with what you will bring). **Ellen will send you directions to her house once you RSVP here and list your food or drink item.  If you do not have Facebook, please comment upon this post or email phila_wca@yahoo.com.

2) Also please bring pillowcases or fabric so that we can make dresses for Little Dresses for Africa (http://www.littledressesforafrica.org) or a larger piece of fabric if you'd like to make your own dress or skirt. It should not be fabric that you do not want to cut up.

3) We ask that this year that each member make a card for the A21 Campaign (http://www.thea21campaign.org) so that we help those who are in need this holiday season: We will collect cards and mail them in bulk. (See below***)

4) We will also have a chance to work on dolls for the Human Trafficking Awareness exhibition and to complete Traveling Journal pages for the 40th Anniversary Women's Caucus for Art Convention.

***Guidelines for cards:
Address your letter along the lines of "Dear Beautiful" or "Lovely," and write an encouraging note that places value and worth upon the girls. In the contents of your letter, be sure to refrain from stating your own beliefs or talking too much about your job or lifestyle, as these girls have all come from differing backgrounds and deserve to be respected and not made to feel bad about their situations. Obviously, they have been through a lot, and we ask that in your letters you do not claim to understand their situations or try to relate to what they have been through. End your letter by signing with your first name only, and do not include any personal details. These letters are for the purpose of encouragement and support.

Call for 2012 Member Artists: WCA's 40th Anniversary Traveling Art Journal (deadline 1/31)

JOIN THE JOURNEY! – WCA’s 40th ANNIVERSARY’S TRAVELING ART JOURNAL

Calling all WCA Philadelphia artists!! We are off on the Little Red Traveling Journal project and seek artists who want to create a small piece of original art for the Journal.

This is a game that will send a little red journal on an expedition across the chapters to celebrate WCA’s 40th anniversary. Chapter-and at-large members have the opportunity to embellish the Moleskine journal pages with art and share their inspirations with a wide network of WCA members across the country. In January 2013, the book will travel back to its original location and be put up for auction during the WCA Conference in New York. One lucky bidder will own a fabulous collection of art created by WCA members all across the country!

We will have 31 pages for our work.  Don’t miss a chance to participate in WCA’s 40th anniversary.

·         Topic: open to your creative inspiration - 2012 is WCA's 40th anniversary celebration.

·         You may create/submit 1 to 3 little pieces. If desired, more than one person can collaborate
on a piece.  We want to be sure that we have space for as many chapter members as possible to include their work in the journal.  If you submit more than one piece, please indicate your priority for including each piece in the journal.  Work will be included in the journal on a first come – first served basis.  Work that is not included will be returned to you.

·    Your Artwork Size: No more than 4 inches high x 3 inches wide x 0.25  of an inch thick.  Small is good! Your piece(s) must fit into a page of the journal so anything larger than the defined dimensions will be trimmed down. Please include your name, title of work, and medium with your work.

·         Media: any original art – painting, collage, photo, fiber, drawing, printmaking, sculpture
(skinny), artist book (skinny), ceramics (very skinny), carved cardboard, calligraphy, mixed media.

·         Deadline: Your piece(s) must be received at the address below by January 31, 2011.

·         Mail to:  Marilyn J. Hayes, 2525 N, Ridgeview Rd, Arlington, VA 22207; Attn: Little Red Journal

·        Marilyn will carefully adhere your work to the journal pages.

·         Documentation: Please send a 4” x6” 300 dpi image of the work to wcadcfeaturedartist@gmail.com, with artist name, title of work, medium, identified by 12/18/11.  All submitted work will be documented on our WCADC blog online exhibit.  The roadmap of the journal from chapter to chapter will be documented as well.

The game began in the Northern California chapter in October, 2011 and it  traveling to the Washington, DC chapter before reaching us in Philadelphia. Will the journal make it from one chapter to the next? Will the post office deliver? Will the journal pages be filled by January, 2013?  The Little Red Traveling Journal is a game of creativity, collaboration, and a gigantic leap of faith.  Thanks to Priscilla Otani, WCA’s President Elect, for generating this fun game.

These works were made by Virginia Maksymowicz during the mid-1980s, when she had a day job as a temporary secretary for major Wall Street firms. While she was at Drexel Burnham Lambert, she had exchanges with Michael Milken, inventor of the junk bond. She also worked for “Mad Dog” Jeff Beck while he was a consultant on the movie Wall Street (making the scripted dialog more realistic for Oliver Stone). In 1985, she created an installation for the steps of Wall Street’s Federal Hall (On the Street - photo above) sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. The works were last exhibited as a group
in the 1988 exhibition "Insider Information" at the Amos Eno Gallery, NYC.
