Call for Art: Stop Slavery Now: A Conversation About Human Trafficking

Stop Slavery Now: A Conversation About Human Trafficking

Featuring: The Ragdoll Project

CALL FOR ART: Deadline March 19, 2012
EXHIBITION DATES: April 6 – April 30, 2012
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, April 6, 2012, 6-9pm
CONTACT EMAIL:  theragdollproject@hotmail.com

will host an exhibition at F&N Gallery in Philadelphia through the month of April 2012. The exhibition is part of
The Ragdoll Project, an ongoing project to promote awareness of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.

There are currently an estimated 27 million people globally that are enslaved. Human trafficking is the second largest organized crime in the world, generating approximately $32 billion. The majority of victims of sex
trafficking are children, teens, and adults who were trafficked into prostitution before age 18. Awareness of the problem is key to creating a significant movement to stop slavery. The goal of this exhibition is to provide an
artistic platform to expose the truth about trafficking and to share with the public ways to end the demand and support survivors.

SUBMISSIONS:
Artists submitting work to the exhibition are encouraged to read about trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Links to information can be found below and on our website www.theragdollproject.org.
A statement about each piece will be displayed next to the artwork to add to the conversation.

All dolls donated to The Ragdoll Project will be displayed at the exhibition. To learn more about the project,
or to donate a doll, visit www.theragdollproject.org.

Please submit digital files of your work and a brief statement about each piece to
theragdollproject@hotmail.com.  2D art is preferred as there is limited space for 3D work.
Deadline for submissions is March 19. Notification of acceptance will be by March 23. Art must be delivered to
F&N Gallery by March 30. There is no fee to submit art, but there is a $10 administrative fee if your art is accepted. This fee is waived for all WCA Philadelphia Chapter members who have paid 2012 dues and artists
who join the WCA Philadelphia Chapter by March 30. 10% of profit from art sales will be donated to support survivors of human trafficking.

http://www.facebook.com/thepermanentwave

"We are a network and community of feminist artists and activists. We
seek to challenge gender inequality not only in all forms of the arts,
but also in politics, our personal lives, and anywhere else it seems
necessary. We believe that women should see each other as
collaborators and inspirations, not rivals. We want to disprove the
belief that “feminism is dead” and continue what was started
generations ago by creating a revolutionary arts movement and
community that's relevant to women, queer, and trans people. We want
you to join, collaborate, and inspire us.

so we're a pretty new group, but we're looking to do all sorts of
things in the future: concerts, benefits, art shows, film viewings,
panels, informal get-togethers... if you have an idea send it our way!

If you want to get involved or have any questions, ideas, etc.,
contact permanentwavephilly@gmail.com

also let us know if you would like to be added to the permanent wave
listserv (google group). that is where a lot of announcements, shows,
interesting articles, and ideas are posted and discussed among all

provides an opportunity for ladies 19+ to let loose for a long weekend

together to write an original song that you will play together on
stage on Sunday. The Ladies Rock Camp Showcase is an unbelievable
experience!  In addition, you will have the opportunity to attend a
variety of workshops with topics related to being a lady rocker. All
proceeds from Ladies Rock Camp go directly to Girls Rock Philly.

*Choice of instruments includes Bass, Drums, Guitar and Keys.

OPPORTUNITY FOR WOMEN MUSICIANS
To those looking for shows, I am still booking the rock n roll women's
music series Sugar Town in Philadelphia.  If you are a publicist or a

band looking for press coverage, please keep in mind that I am no
longer writing for the Philadelphia DailyNews, and just doing album
reviews for the recently relaunched Magnet.
This means that I am no longer previewing or reviewing live music on a
regular basis. I do like to know when acts that interest me are coming
to town, but I cannot promise regular live music coverage right now.

National Call for Art: Petroleum Paradox: For Better or For Worse?

CALL FOR ART:
Petroleum Paradox: For Better or For Worse?

As an artist -- what do you think about the Petroleum Paradox and what is happening in our oil dependent society and world?  How does that manifest in your work?

“The discovery of oil, in 1859, in Pennsylvania, transformed our way of life; we are enveloped by petroleum products - from the shoes we wear, to the materials our clothes are made of, to the way we heat our houses, to our modes of transportation.  Oil dependency pollutes the environment causing respiratory illness, endangers wildlife, and necessitates the large scale loss of life as we search to secure sources of oil overseas. How do we maintain our optimism despite this rush to grab dwindling non-renewable energy assets, instead of focusing on renewable energy and the prevention of global warming?

Our founding fathers could not have envisioned our two-party system, with the built in checks and balances, would fail to safeguard against tyranny of big business oil companies. The failure of our elected officials to implement an effective energy policy leaves the American people in a vulnerable position. A petroleum based economy subjects our citizens to resource-based wars that jeopardizes our children and holds our standard of living perilously tied to the price of a barrel of oil.

Fossil fuels are contributing to global warming and misinformation about global warming on media networks owned by major corporations, benefits the status quo. The self-interest of the American people is not paralleled by the self-interest of energy companies that seek to maximize profits at the expense of innovation and development. This exhibit seeks to raise awareness of our imperiled democracy and the Petroleum Paradox. What do you think about the Petroleum Paradox and what is happening in our oil dependent society and world?

About the Exhibition:  Petroleum Paradox:  For Better or For Worse is a collaborative exhibition with the Women's Caucus for Art and Denise Bibro Fine Art.
Please upload a current Bio and Artist Resume as the Denise Bibro Gallery will be promoting the artists selected and their work.

Juror:  Eleanor Heartney, is a Contributing Editor to Art in America and Artpress and has written extensively on contemporary art issues for such other publications as Artnews, Art and Auction, The New Art Examiner, the Washington Post and The New York Times.
