A culturally diverse community of artists presents views and visions on the environment

Sponsored by the Women’s Caucus for Art, Washington DC & Philadelphia Chapter

The Women’s Caucus for Art of Greater Washington DC and Philadelphia Chapters, open a 34 artist exhibit with performance art and eco-demonstration on Sunday, June 24th, 2012, 2-4pm at Sandy Spring Museum. www.wcadc.org

WCA-DC and Philadelphia are affiliate chapters of The National Women’s Caucus for Art, a 40 year old organization, focused on art, education and social activism. Its members include visual artists, museum professionals and curators, historians, teachers and collectors. WCA supports the cultural diversity of its membership.www.nationalwca.org

The June 24th event will feature the eco-performance art of Philadelphia based artists Bonnie MacAllister, “What the Water Wore”, Mira Treatman, “Gertrude for Dinner”, Gabrielle Casella, "Transit Tales: a public her-story" as well as "Rockin' Retro Using Relics", a jewelry workshop using recycled objects by Gabrielle Casella.. The visual art exhibit, curated by Barbara Wolanin, PhD, opens on June 13 and continues through September 9, 2012 at Sandy Spring Museum’s galleries. This exhibit is diverse in expression and media; representing painting, sculpture, digital art, photography, assemblage and multi-media art in topics concerning the beauty of nature, the environmental problems today and of the future as well as works using natural or recycled materials.

Additionally, summer, 2012 in coordination with the Sandy Spring Museum and this exhibit, a children’s art project for environmental awareness and fun making art, will be offered by Margaret Paris, visual artist, art teacher and a Maryland resident.

Member News: Ana Vizcarra Rankin

Ana Vizcarra Rankin will be graduating with an MFA in Studio Art tomorrow.

She writes, "This happens in conjunction with a large public art opening, where, along with a multitude of other emerging artists, I will be revealing what goes down during a two year, intensive art program.  There is a wide spectrum of thought, discipline, and approaches to a contemporary art practice, and I believe this show demonstrates such. So come visit me in downtown Philly tomorrow, Friday early evening, and attend Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art's MFA thesis exhibition."

Ana has been honored with the Judith McGregor Caldwell Purchase Prize, which means one of her large paintings (the one on the right in the photo) will be accessioned into the Academy Museum's permanent collection.

Member News: Art in the Open (Barbara Gesshel & Simone Spicer)

Barbara Gesshel

Philadelphia, PA

The work I am looking to undertake will be in watercolor, chalk, and murals on paper using tempera (ie large format paper hung between 2 trees) on which people could participate in the creation of a public mural.

Simone Spicer

Wyndmoor, PA

http://www.simonespicer.com
I have a huge collection of plastic containers and lids, and would be interested in stringing them together like beads or plastic bobbles, in one long strand and see how long I can make it in the allotted time.   This 'single stream' might follow the curve of the path, or the river, and I could talk to people about the scary facts I have learned in my investigation of plastics in the environment, and enroll people to bring me plastic containers for the project.

Art in the Open (AiO) brings the action and intrigue of artists making their art directly to Philadelphia's Schuylkill riverbanks for three days in May. Here, free to all audiences, selected artists work with brushes, cameras, sewing machines, pens, and hammers, to respond to this historic and environmentally unique local setting. The public is invited to walk among the artists and observe their process of creation and craft up close. Park visitors can also make their own art at select locations along the riverbank path and join in related events offered by a wide partnership of the city's cultural organizations.

AiO celebrates the Philadelphia landscape as both inspiration and as an open-air studio for artists. Over the days of May 18-20, 2012, from Fairmount Water Works to Bartram's Garden, AiO will explore the natural beauty and urban character of the Schuylkill River: where West Philadelphia separates from Center City and thousands of people enjoy a beloved recreational park of paths and views.

Press: Philadelphia Weekly on 5/4 Benefit for Survivors of Human Trafficking at the Rotunda

Benefit for Survivors of Human Trafficking
This collaboration between the Women’s Caucus for Art and Permanent Wave Philly brings together local artists and activists united in their opposition to human trafficking. They’ve organized a multimedia extravaganza, mixing film, visual art and live music: singer-songwriter Suzi Brown; GhettoSongBird, a soulful performer who rocks out in platform boots and glitter; and Jurassic Shark, an indie-pop band formed at last summer’s Girls Rock Philly camp. Enjoy the music, dance your ass off, and be sure to buy some of the homemade goodies baked by participants and volunteers. All proceeds go to Dawn’s Place, a local nonprofit that helps women escape the cycle and rebuild their lives. -Raymond Simon

7pm. $5. The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St. phila-wca.blogspot.com
