Member News: Pam Flynn

PRESS RELEASE:
Demarcation –artwork by Pamela Flynn at Jed Williams Studio
Reception on Friday December 14, 2012 from 5-7 PM
“Barrier study 2”, mixed media/photography, by Pamela Flynn

On December 14, 2011 the local Philadelphia community art space, Jed Williams Studio, will feature the work of Pamela Flynn.  The exhibit will run from December 14, 2012- February 14, 2013. Jed Williams Studio is located at 615 Bainbridge St. in the Bella Vista/Queen Village section of Philadelphia.
The Pamela Flynn’s solo exhibit Demarcation addresses the notion of exclusion and inclusion. The work asks the viewer to contemplate the barriers one must cross to achieve the American Dream.  Flynn addresses the charged issue of immigration with images that are at times subtle and at times blunt and to the point. Pamela Flynn’s work can be seen on her website www.pamelaflynnart.com

Pamela Flynn is a mixed media artist. Her work is founded in social/cultural issues. Flynn holds an MFA from New Jersey City University and is a Professor of Art and Fine Arts Coordinator at Holy Family University, Philadelphia. She is an exhibiting member of the Phoenix Gallery, NYC and is an active member of The Women’s Caucus for Art, Philadelphia Chapter. Her work has been exhibited nationwide and in South Korea. She is a recipient of the 2006 Puffin Foundation Grant for the project Road Shrines: A Peripheral Blur. Flynn is currently involved with an anti gun violence project that has been exhibited in NYC and will be exhibited in Philadelphia this January 2013.

This exhibit, Demarcation, at  Jed Williams Studio, addresses the issue of barriers and bids the viewer to consider structure and placement and one’s relationship to a wall or fence-physically/conceptually/politically. A wall/fence may be a barrier to one person and may be a means of protection to another. This work brings attention to the barriers that persons must climb (figuratively and actually) everyday in order to share in the American dream. The work in this exhibit is process intense and layered as are the issues that are conceptually addressed.

The exhibiting of this work at Jed Williams Studio is a step by Pamela Flynn to bring her work directly to the community. Flynn believes all too often contemporary visual art is confined to the white cubes of the gallery districts in our cities and fails to reach the greater community. It is her belief that community galleries like Jed Williams Studio help to bridge this gap.

Demarcation will be at Jed Williams Studio 615 Bainbridge St. Philadelphia, PA from December 14, 2012- February 14, 2013. The Opening Reception is Friday December 14, 2012 from 5-7 PM.
Jed Williams Studio has been operating since Dec. 2010.  It is part of the revitalization of Bainbridge St., just one block south of South St. Jed Williams Studio aims to contribute to the vitality and unique spirit of Bainbridge St. and the Queen Village/Bella Vista neighborhood by bringing Philadelphia’s art scene to the neighborhood.

What are you grateful for?

After graduating from Moore College, I joined the WCA to continue the artistic conversations with like minded people. It was the best decision that I made because there are so many supportive and generous people in this organization. So, as I ponder the "what I am thankful for" question - I can add the WCA women of Philadelphia to my list. Thank you for making me feel welcomed. Share with us what makes you feel grateful in the comments below or on our facebook page.

I have listed a number of opportunities below.

Small But Mighty Grants

Last week, we featured a woman's only grant. This week we are featuring a grant just for Philadelphia artists. It is called Small But Mighty Arts Grants

The creative genius behind this organization is Erica Hawthrone and she spoke at our last WCA meeting. Erica  is a Minnesota native, singer and spoken word artist who moved to Philly for its art scene.  She won a Knight Arts Challenge grant for her project, Small But Mighty Arts Grant, which positions itself as a source of micro-grant source for local up-and-coming artists in need of project funding.

Here's a bit about the mission from the website:

SBM arts grant will serve as a catalyst for artists to further their creative work, thus helping them gain artistic momentum.  With this momentum, artists may be more prepared to advance their creative careers, including the ability to attain other professional opportunities as well as additional funding.   The community also greatly benefits when artists are able to share their work by enhancing the creative landscape in Philadelphia and building a stronger creative economy.

Please make sure that you sign up for the mailing list and show your support for this amazing Philly organization!

The painter Siona Benjamin, who resides in New Jersey, will discuss the ideas animating her work as well as how her cultural heritage has influenced her practice. "I am an artist originally from Bombay, India, of Bene Israel Jewish descent. My work reflects my background and the transition between my old and new worlds." Her work in Ornament and Narrative features the installationLilith and paintings from her recent series Improvisation that draw on traditional images, cultural references and styles from her Indian-Jewish heritage, transformed through her own unique, contemporary pop cultural sensibility. The work synthesizes seemingly disparate elements from her rich multi-cultural background, and elements of both her old and new worlds.
