Call for Art: "Violence" (A Juried Exhibition)

sponsored by the Womenʼs Caucus for Art, Philadelphia Chapter
in cooperation with the Montgomery County Guild of Professional Artists

PROSPECTUS
THEME:

We live in a violent world. Sandy Hook, Nickel Mines and Columbine. September 11 and Oklahoma City. Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea and two World Wars to end all war. JFK, RFK, MLK and Harvey Milk. Lisa Steinberg and JonBenét Ramsey. And the millions of others whose names weʼve forgotten or have never known.

When is violence justified and when it is not? Are violent acts committed by ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances to be judged differently? If nature itself is inherently violent, is human nature any different?

We are seeking artworks that address these complicated questions. They might offer hope; they might scream out in despair. They might be political; they might be very personal.

To begin the conversation, weʼve started compiling a list of topics. We assume there will be many more:

self-defense
torture
war
guns
landmines
human trafficking
mental illness
bride burning
gay bashing
self-immolation
human shields
school shootings
car bombs
kidnapping
child abuse
battered women

Call For Proposals: Art Works – NEA ( Supporting multidisciplinary art-science collaborations)

DEADLINE: March 07, 2013

From National Endowment for the Arts:

"The guiding principle of "Art Works" is at the center of everything we do at the NEA. "Art Works" refers to three things: the works of art themselves, the ways art works on audiences, and the fact that art is work for the artists and arts professionals who make up the field.

To make "art work," the NEA has included the advancement of innovation as a core component of its mission as a way to ensure the vitality of the arts. We recognize that arts and design organizations are often in the forefront of innovation in their work and strongly encourage innovative projects which are characterized as those that:

Are likely to prove transformative with the potential for meaningful change, whether in the development or enhancement of new or existing art forms, new approaches to the creation or presentation of art, or new ways of engaging the public with art;
Are distinctive, offering fresh insights and new value for their fields and/or the public through unconventional solutions; and
Have the potential to be shared and/or emulated, or are likely to lead to other advances in the field.

If you haven't already done so, there are two easy ways to renew:

• on-line through the National WCA website <http://www.nationalwca.org/applicants/application.php>

Once you do, send me the link and I will post it on the WCA Philadelphia Chapter Blog. Our Chapter is in the midst of writing several proposals to university, nonprofit, and commercial galleries. To be included, you must have an active Irving Sandler file.

Happy New Year to all. I look forward to hearing from you (and perhaps seeing some of you next month at the National Conference in New York City)!

Press release
Considering Harm/Philadelphia
Exhibition: January 12 - January 30, 2013
Reception: January 12, 2013  1-3 pm
Pamela Flynn and CeaseFirePa are working together to bring awareness to gun violence in Philadelphia. The Seed on Diamond Gallery is pleased to present a benefit exhibition by Pamela Flynn titled Considering Harm/Philadelphia. Pamela Flynn will be donating a percentage of proceeds from the sale of the artwork to CeaseFirePa Education Fund.

Considering Harm is a body of work that is traveling to US cities to bring awareness to the harm gun violence brings to individuals and to communities. The exhibit was exhibited in NYC at the Phoenix Gallery in the spring of 2012. The exhibit consists of 29 mixed media pieces that are contemplative works on gun violence. Each work is exhibited with text that refers to an incident involving gun violence in Philadelphia. The combined impact of the work and text creates an atmosphere of contemplative tension. The viewer is forced to Consider Harm.

Pamela Flynn is a mixed media artist who deals with social and cultural issues in her work. She is a recipient of the 2006 Puffin Foundation Grant for her work Road Shrines: A Peripheral Blur. Pamela Flynn is a professor of art and the fine arts coordinator at Holy Family University, Philadelphia.
CeaseFirePa is dedicated to reducing gun violence through education and advocacy.
The artist and representatives from CeaseFirePa will be at the opening January 12th, 2013 from 1:00-3:00 PM.
