Member News: Ana Vizcarra Rankin (CRANE Arts Project Room, May 3-28)

Voids that Bind
May 3-28, 2013
CRANE Arts Project Room
1400 North American Street Philadelphia PA 19122
p-2152323213 hours wed-fri 12-6pm

Opening reception 2nd Thursday May 9th 6-9pm
Artist's closing Reception Friday May 24th 6-9pm
Ana Vizcarra Rankin's site specific installation investigates issues of nomadism, migration and pilgrimage. Her large map paintings are oriented with the South towards the top, referencing the seminal image by Uruguayan constructivist painter Joaquín Torres Garcia, and reconsidering our relationship to the planet and its ecosystem. They fold up like the maps we used before global positioning systems were available on every phone, and sustain wear and tear between viewings. In conjunction with redacted hotel keycards and gilded foods, Ana's installation invites the viewer to examine his or her own sense of being in and of the world.
There's more information below, and a pdf postcard attached, along with an image.
Thanks and hope to see you there.

Ana Vizcarra Rankin

About my work:

The environments I create are an exploration of mobility’s mediation.
My map paintings, large as sails and full of cartographic anaphora, are part of an ongoing investigation into nomadism, migration and pilgrimage. Whether terrestrial or celestial, they are all oriented with the South towards the top, referencing the seminal image by Uruguayan constructivist painter Joaquín Torres Garcia, and reconsidering our relationship to the planet and its ecosystem. The Large Map Paintings fold up into packages the size a pillowcase, or an air travel carry-on, and sustain wear and tear between viewings, like the maps we used before global positioning systems were available on every phone. In the map paintings, the planet becomes body, and the sky becomes landscape. Using layers of gesso and pigment on unprimed, un-stretched, 96” wide, 100% cotton canvas of varying lengths, I attempt to depict the phenomenological coordinates of my sense of being in and of the world. Each can take up to 80 hours of work, including research and drying time.
The baroque-ness of our current place in history and art history has become a source of fascination for me, with a rich verbal and visual mélange de langue that is constantly increasing via virtual social networks and previously unprecedented exposure and means of communication with my international, multicultural human family. The sculptural objects, which I call fetiches, are small mixed media viewfinders created using a combination of traditional methods and assemblage. Along with redacted keycards, gilded foods, found natural objects, and in symbiosis with the map paintings, they act as symbolic referents to myths and archetypes of traveler and native.

About me:

Ana Vizcarra Rankin is a native of Maldonado, Uruguay. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Art History summa cum laude from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2010 and her Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2012. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Exploris Museum NC, Philadelphia Magic Gardens, the Chestnut Hill Academy PA and the Sandy Springs Museum MD. Awards include the Essie Baron Memorial Award in 2010 and the Judith McGregor Caldwell Purchase Prize for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum permanent collection in 2012.

"Ana Vizcarra Rankin's large scale maps chart the heavens as well as the continents of the planet. Inspired by ancient cartography in their malleability and sturdiness, her paintings depict the phenomenological coordinates of her sense of being in and of the world. Philadelphia Chapter Presents Student Award

On Wednesday, April 24, the Philadelphia Chapter presented its annual award for excellence at the 2013 Senior Show at Moore College of Art & Design.

This year's winner is Kate Brazina, whose video installation, Life's a Drag, takes a look at gender roles, cross-dressing and performance. Through interviews with three professional drag queens, viewers can begin to get a sense of the personal motivations for engagement with the genre, as well as its historical context.

Chapter Treasurer, Virginia Maksymowicz, presented the award at the "VIP" ceremony preceding the opening reception. Once the public arrived, we were treated to an appearance by Kate's three collaborators: Icon Ebony Fierce, Porcelain and Ann Artist.

The exhibition, in the Galleries at Moore, will be on display until May 18.

Congratulations, Kate!

TONIGHT ON PBS: Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines

WW-logo-02ss
"The film examines the role of superheroines, particularly Wonder Woman and her evolution over multiple decades. The strong woman reflects her time period and the film does well to highlight each change. The editing, flow of the film and even the graphics are very impressive."

VIOLENCE Opens at SPP Galleries

On Saturday, April 13, the artists' reception for exhibition VIOLENCE took place at SPP Galleries in the Philadelphia Inquirer building in Conshohocken.

The show features work by more than two-dozen women artists addressing some of the complex questions surrounding this difficult topic. Artists from the Philadelphia Chapter of the WCA participated, along with members of the NYC and DC Chapters, and  MCGOPA (The Montgomery County Guild of Professional Artists).

Coincidentally, Sunday afternoon's TED Radio Hour on WHYY featured the very same subject. Called "The Violence Within Us," the segment echoed many of the same questions asked by the artists in VIOLENCE. Karen Love Cooler, a member of both WCA and MCGOPA, wrote in her artist statement: "Are violent acts committed by ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances to be judged differently?" The TED presenters asked: "So why are some people violent, and others aren't? Are some of us born that way, or can anyone be pushed into committing acts of cruelty? What would it take for an ordinary person to become violent?"

For a full list of participating artists click HERE. More photographs of the VIOLENCE exhibition can be seen on Flickr.

IMPORTANT IRVING SANDLER FILE NOTICE

Those WCA Members who have an account on the Irving Sandler file, should update it. Not sure if you have an Irving Sandler file – check on the right column. If your name is listed there, then you have an account.

New members (and old ones who never set up an account) should do so immediately and send Virginia the link.

This is from the website:

We’d like to update you with a change to our account policies. In April 2013, users that have not accessed their accounts for one year will be removed from the Artists File.

This policy will promote a livelier, more efficient exchange between Artists and Curators on the site, and encourage increased updates and content.
Starting April 17, users will be removed who have not accessed their accounts since April 17, 2012. If an account is deleted, one may always create a new account and add artwork to a portfolio.

We hope users will understand that these changes are positioned to foster a more dynamic, useful environment moving forward.

We live in a violent world: school shootings; terrorist bombings; unending warfare; political assassinations; muggings; rape; battery; murder; child abuse; human trafficking . . . the list goes on and is, regrettably, way too long.
This timely exhibition by more than two-dozen women artists addresses some of the complex and difficult questions surrounding the topic of violence. The works range from Michele Colburn’s Bearing Arms (three giant teddy bears whose plush fabric reveals disturbing patterns) to Jing Deng’s American Nightmare (a painting of a school’s playground viewed through the cross-hairs of a scope). Other pieces consider wars and their aftermath, including the lingering effects of the Holocaust. Some approaches are cool (such as Pamela Flynn’s tally marks in Still Counting) while some are decidedly emotional (like Gail Morrison-Hall’s Bloody Self-Portrait). Others play close to home looking at women in the military (Krista Jiannacopoulos’s Combat Confidential), while still others take an international view (Wendee Koren’s Once Upon the End, where the eyes of a woman peer out from the slit of a niqab, or Cindy Back’s No Violence: Las Casas de Suchitoto, a series of silkscreens based upon her recent trip to El Salvador).
One of the display cases features a grouping of handmade dolls from The Ragdoll Project. Made by a variety of artists and other volunteers, the Project is an ongoing effort by the Philadelphia Women's Caucus for Art that educates the public about human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. The artists involved also work to support survivors, and at-risk women and children.
