Opportunities

Here are some opportunities that I have found and would like to share. They cover the areas of Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York and parts of New England. Some of the deadlines are close - so if you are interested - I would recommend opening up the links sooner than later! 

Sarah Doyle Gallery (Rhode Island)  seeks submissions in all media for September 2015 through May 2016. Art must align with the Sarah Doyle Women's Center's mission of exploring issues of gender, especially the intersections of gender with race/ethnicity, economic class, sexuality, gender identity, age, dis/ability, and other markers of identity. The Noyes Museum of Art (Oceanville, NJ) has established an artist membership program for regional artists. The Signature Artist Membership is for professional artists, while the Associate Artist Membership is for emerging artists. Exhibition opportunities at the Noyes Museum and its satellite facilitiesin Atlantic City, Hammonton and/or at Seaview Resort in Galloway, participation in programs and events, and access to artist resources are some of the benefits of acceptance in this program. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts will convene its next regular business meeting on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown. In a meeting organized around the theme of the importance of artists to our communities, the main item on the agenda will be the announcement of the 2015 Artist Fellowship Awards. Directly after the conclusion of the business meeting, the Arts Council's 18th Annual Artists' Roundtable will convene at the same location at 2:45 p.m.  This year's Artists' Roundtable will highlight topics of interest to artists working in all disciplines. Women’s Studio Workshop (New York State) offers a six to eight week studio residency grant to support an artist creating a new body of work in one of WSW’s studio disciplines – intaglio, hand papermaking, letterpress printing, silkscreen, book arts, photography, and ceramics.CLICK HERE. 

Call for Entries: Women's Caucus for Art - New Hampshire Chapter "Juried Exhibition - FORCE OF NATURE: Exploring the Power of the Feminine"

The Women's Caucus for Art is seeking artists to submit to this call for entry. When women demonstrate their feminine power and energy in positive ways that command deep respect, they are often referred to as a "Force of Nature." Artwork should reflect this theme. Broadly interpreted, concepts might range from myth and legend to the personal, historical or political. Artwork considering Nature (as in Mother Nature and her natural forces), eco art and ecofeminism are also strongly encouraged. Up to three artworks. 2D, 3D, video, installation and performance are acceptable for submission. WCA Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Judith Brodsky is the Juror.
Submission Deadline: March 30, 2015
Exhibition Dates: July 6-August 14, 2015

Call for Sculptors: Morris Arts "Public Sculpture"

Morris Arts is seeking an experienced stone carver to implement a proposed public sculpture in the town of Morristown. We are seeking someone that has a portfolio of completed carved stone pieces that have been commissioned or purchased. The selected artist must have documented experience working in a community setting and be comfortable with community engagement in all aspects of planning.

Exciting New Residency Program in Philadelphia, PA

"The Village of Arts and Humanities requests proposals from individuals and collectives, for two, four-month artist residencies in cycle one of SPACES: Artist Residency at The Village.
Through SPACES, youth and families in North Central Philadelphia collaborate with resident artists to explore how the process of sharing artistic practice and engaging in meaningful exchanges of information within a community, can nurture the creation of SPACE—space to create, to dream, to build, and to transform physical landscapes."

Residency includes accommodations for four month stay and a $10,000 stipend to carry out proposed project.

The Arctic Circle Residency

In the summer of 2011, while in Jennie Shanker’s Professional Practice class at Moore College of Artand Design, I had to begin an application for a  residency as a practice for my professional life as an artist. After hours of researching and daydreaming, I selected the most adventurous and seemingly improbable residency – one that took place in a 160-foot tall ship, named The Antigua, that travels the waters in the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle residency takes place in the international territory of Svalbard, a mountainous archipelago just 10 degrees from the North Pole. This residency brings together international artists of all disciplines, scientists, architects, and educators who collectively explore remote and fascinating destinations aboard a sailing vessel.

Finally, on Sept. 27, 2013, around 5:00, I said goodbye to my cell phone, Wi-Fi and all connections to the known world, and in the company of 25 other artists, embarked on an adventure that will undoubtedly leave a live long impression on my imagination and heart.

My project for this residency was to walk and only leave footprints- impermanent artifacts in order to remind us that we can explore, engage with, and seek out the beauty and mysteries of the natural world, all the while mindful that we are guests and stewards of a planet worth saving for current and future generations to experience.  I documented my walks with a one-word poem. I also collected 4 large cases of Arctic trash while on my walks that will later become a sculpture and/or installation.

Many of the artists on board photographed the ice for later paintings. Some did video work, time-lapse photography, performances, and some even recorded the sounds of the ice for their research. Overall, there were two composers; one poet and the others were visual artists. 26 artists were chosen out of 320 applicants and 14 nationalities represented.  In addition to myself, there were two other Philadelphia artists on board – Terry Adkins and Diane Burko.

As many of know, Diane Burko was the 2011 recipient of the WCA Lifetime Achievement Award. 

The trip was not without its dangers. Polar bears, seasickness, rugged terrain abounded. In fact, while on land, we were guarded by three woman guards and one dog. Each guard had a rifle and was on constant look out for bears. We saw three bears- from very safe distances, lots of seals, reindeer and one Arctic fox.

I went on this trip with a purpose to document my footprints and I left with an intimate meditation of time and place. The images that I captured will unravel the complexities and contradictions of this extreme environment and our relationship with place. Aaron O'Connor was our director and I cannot thank him enough for this wonderful opportunity.
