Call for Art: Half the Sky: Intersections in Social Practice Art (Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China)

PictureChina Exhibition
Half the Sky: Intersections of Social Practice Art
 2014

WCA's International Caucus has created a global opportunity for BOTH women artists and WOMEN essayists. We are so very fortunate to offer this unprecedented art-based cultural exchange for women artists and essayists in the US to exhibit and share their work with women artists in China at LuXun  Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. Luxun Academy is one of the premier art academies in China. We are also privileged to have some amazing jurors:  Alma Ruiz, Senior Curator at Museum on Contemporary Art - Los Angeles, for the art and Terri Weissman, assistant professor of Art History at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for the essays.

Overview
Half the Sky: Intersections in Social Practice Art is follows on the heels of Woman + Body, our October 2012 collaboration with Hye-Seong Tak Lee and women artists in Seoul and Gwangju, South Korea. In March 2013, International Caucus member Jing Deng, through her friend and artist Yin Ou Zhao, who lives in China, arranged for the International Caucus of the Women's Caucus for Art to be invited by the Wei Er Shen,  President of LuXun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China to create an art and cultural exchange and exhibition between artists and essayists juried through WCA and women artists curated in China by Yin Ou. This will  be held at the Academy April 15-30, 2014.  In addition to the exhibiiton, Half the Sky: Intersections of Social Practice Art  will include a small delegation of selected WCA members, who will travel to Shenyang for the opening of this exhibition and to participate in 2-3 days of interactive events with the Chinese artists and, possibly, students of the Academy.

The academy is interested in providing an opportunity for Chinese women artists to interact with artists from our organization, to learn more about feminist art history in the west and share their art with our artists. LuXun  is one of the premier art academies in China and is located in Shenyang - the major metropolitan area of northeast China.  Shenyang is about 5 hours from Beijing and major US airlines fly there. The father of Jing’s friend Yin Ou Zhao taught many of the currently famous Chinese artists, including Wei Er Shen.

Social Practice Art
Social practice art  encompasses a wide range of art forms - public art, interactive media, performance, dialogue, activism, community practice, community building, interventions, and collaborations that cross art, public and social arenas. This project's cultural exchange is in itself a social practice form of art.  In the exhibition, artwork from our juried process and the curated Chinese artists will create a powerful environment in which the delegation and Chinese women artists and students will interact in a  variety of events - creation of collaborative art, dialogues, demonstrations, sharing of the catalog essays and  techniques and more.

Call for Paper Dolls: The Ragdoll Project needs your dolls for Half the Sky: Intersections in Social Practice Art, presented by the Women’s Caucus for Art International Caucus at the LuXun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China

CALL FOR PAPER DOLLS!
The Ragdoll Project is creating a new installation that will be entered into the juried exhibition Half the Sky: Intersections in Social Practice Art, presented by the Women’s Caucus for Art International Caucus at the LuXun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China.

We request donations of handmade dolls cut out from paper. The dolls will be stitched together by organizers of the project and presented to the jury.

Installation Theme:
Witness. Millions of women and children across the globe suffer daily as victims of commercial sexual exploitation. As 53% of the world’s population, women can help victims of CSE and take action to end this crime. We can witness and reflect a woman’s value back to her, we can witness her suffering so it can be exposed, and then we can collectively take action to end it. We will create a web of interconnected dolls that stand as a witness for the women affected by commercial sexual exploitation.

If you would like to include text on your doll, we ask you to write a statement about what you are a witness for by using the phrase “I see your ______” For example: “I see your pain,” “I see your courage,” “I see your uniqueness,” “I see that they mistreated you,” "I hear your voice."

Deadline: September 25, 2013

Dolls:
Dolls should be made of paper that is at least the weight of copy paper and flexible enough that the final piece can be rolled up in a tube for shipping. Dolls cannot exceed11in x 14in. The theme is open to interpretation, keeping in mind our intention to be respectful of women who have been commercially sexually exploited.

Dolls will not be returned. If we do not collect enough dolls to complete this project by the deadline, you may request that your doll be returned.

Exhibition Opportunity: Half the Sky

WCA's International Caucus has created a global opportunity in China for BOTH women artists and essayists for April 2014.

We are so very fortunate to offer Half the Sky: Intersections in Social Practice Art. This is an unprecedented, art-based cultural exchange for women artists and essayists in the US to exhibit and share their work with women artists in China at LuXun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. Luxun Academy is one of the premier art academies in China.

We are also privileged to have amazing jurors:  Alma Ruiz, Senior Curator at Museum of Contemporary Art - Los Angeles, for the art and Terri Weissman, assistant professor of Art History at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for the essays.

This is a big project!

It is both an exhibition and cultural exchange.
  • A small working delegation of WCA members will go to LuXun Academy to build community, enhance mutual understanding, share our artistic perspectives and techniques through art-based events that this delegation will lead. More information about the delegation can be found on our Half the Sky home page http://wcainternationalcaucus.weebly.com/half-the-sky-2014shenyang-china.html

  • As a whole, the project is social practice art and we will be doing a lot of documenting!

We really need your help!

1) We ask your assistance in sharing our Indiegogo campaign to people you know, through your social media and email contacts. The campaign is also now live and will run through September 14th. Please also share this far and wide. We encourage everyone to contribute as soon as possible. Here is the link to our campaign page  http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/466573/wdgi/3967541  And here is the short link  igg.me/at/WCA-China-Indiegogo

Where will the money go?
  • $6,000 is our minimum goal for this Indiegogo campaign! It will cover:
    • $1200 room and board for the full delegation (4 days/nights at the Academy)
    • $100 travel stipends for each delegate (15 delegates)
    • editing and printing of catalogs
    • printing of signage, posters and postcards
    • tech equipment (hard drives, computer tablet, converters, speakers)
    • baggage fees for tech equipment
    • art materials for interactive events
    • gifts for the Chinese artists and our hosts at LuXun Academy of Fine Arts
