Women Make Movies Show Five Indie Movies at the Steinbeck

Women Make Movies is launching a 4-month showing of five indie films during the Honoring Women’s Rights conference and exhibition on September 7th at the National Steinbeck Center in in Salinas, California. Their website states Women Make Movies addresses the under representation and misrepresentation of women in the media industry. The films showing at the Steinbeck cover issues such as Title IX, feminine art activists, progressive Muslim views, and Eastern-bloc sex trafficking.

On September’s First Friday, Women Make Movies (WMM) are showing a string of five indie films shown continually through January 7. This also marks a kick-off to the Honoring Women’s Rights conference and exhibition at the Steinbeck. The conference and exhibition are sponsored, in part, by the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA), as a tribute to their 40th anniversary.
The following indie film titles will play beginning on September 7, and the 1-day Honoring Women’s Rights conference on September 8th and during 4-month juried WCA art exhibition until January 6, 2013: 

•     The Heretics (29 min) Tracing the influence of the Women's Movement's Second Wave on art and life - Film by Elli Safari.
•     The Noble Struggle of Amina Wadud (29 min) The Islamic world is shocked by a mixed-gender Friday prayer congregation in New York. A powerful portrait of this African-American Muslim woman - Film by Elli Safari.
•     Price of Sex (73 min) Underground criminal network of human trafficking and experiences of trafficked Eastern European women - Film by Mimi Chakarova.
•     License to Thrive (48 min) A smart and highly-entertaining exploration of the unique history of Title IX legislation and its critical role in creating female leaders - Film by Theresa Moore.
•     Girl Wrestler (53 min) 13-year-old Tara Neal, a Texas teenager, upsets traditional expectations by insisting that girls and boys should be able to wrestle - Film by Diane Zander.

WMM initially started in 1972 to train women in becoming film and video makers. Before the decade ended, WMM initiated distribution and exhibition opportunities for women’s films to expand their exposure by initiating a distribution service, presenting on‑going screenings in New York, and sponsoring two international women’s film festivals. Today, WMM regularly works with dozens of women's organizations in U.S., Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East in support of International Women's Film Festivals.

The juried exhibition features works in a variety of media by women artists from around the globe, as chosen by acclaimed sculptor, Beverly Buchanan.

An opening reception will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art.

The Longevity-inspired exhibition marks a milestone for the Women's Caucus for the Art. The WCA is celebrating its 40th anniversary of recognizing and celebrating women in the arts and their achievements.

The Contemporary Women Artists exhibition is the oldest running exhibition in the St. Louis area that focuses on the wealth and breadth of work created by women artists.

Contemporary Women Artists XVI: Longevity is juried by Beverly Buchanan, an African-American artist who explores Southern vernacular architecture.

Buchanan is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial fellowship; a Pollock-Krasner award and two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. In 2011, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Women's Caucus for Art. Buchanan's work is featured in numerous private and public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Ga.

We are hosting an online exhibition with cash prizes of $50 each for the top five works voted by the WCA membership. These works will be placed on the National WCA website for a year and the entire gallery of all work submitted will be viewable for three months.

Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) is seeking multiple expressions of Bound, which can range from literal to poetic, abstract to representational, and psychological to social & political commentary. Show work that explores the concepts of bound and borders—be they internal, external, constructed, imagined, imposed, or embraced and how boundaries define and shape our identities, relationships, ideas and politics. Artists are encouraged to interpret this theme broadly; submit works that have resonance and meaning to you.

Submissions: Artists may submit up to three works per entry,  all media accepted except giclees of original work are not permissible.  Works may not exceed 40” in width and installations may not exceed 5 sq ft.

DISAPORA – a scattering, a dispersion, a migration, a loss of homeland. Artists are asked to create original works that examine what it means to be separated from your roots, your center, your power, your ancestors, your community, your culture, your land, your home, your people – real or imagined, physical or metaphorical. Is repatriation or reconciliation possible? Desired? Wide interpretations are encouraged.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:   “Diaspora” is part of WCA's national WCA Conference that takes place from February 13-16, 2013 in New York, NY. The Women’s Caucus for Art Conference is held in conjunction with the College Art Association (CAA) Conference. WCA is a non-profit 501(c)3  organization and an affiliate society of CAA.

Member Spotlight: Jeanne Lombardo and Bonnie MacAllister

Congratulations Bonnie MacAllister and Jeanne Lombardo, winners of the $500 Artlines Fall Edition Grant! They will be working together to produce WCA's first art-focused Artlines this fall.

Just recently, this duo participated in Zig Zag Handmade's "Branching Away: A Sestina" written for puppets. Bonnie wrote the text, recorded the audio, and helped direct and Jeanne Lombardo was half of George the Dragon. The performance was held at The Walking Fish Theater located in Fishtown.  The production also starred WCA members Ellen Bonett and Ruth Schanbacher as well as Jamie Campbell.

   Zig Zag Handmade will perform at in “Discordinalia: Goddess Night” at Ellen Powell Tiberino Museum on this Saturday, July 28 from 7 p.m.-12 a.m.  Bonnie will screen and perform "Water the Water Wore" which debuted at our chapter and DC chapters' joint show at the Sandy Spring Museum.

Jeanne as 1/2 of George the Dragon

Designer Jeanne Lombardo specializes in all things creative: graphic design, marketing, resume writing, event coordination, craft workshops, blogging, bartending, and creating specialty partyware that sells in two boutiques: Square Peg Artery & Salvage and Vix Emporium in Philadelphia. Also, she teaches jewelry workshops at Blueberry Bog in Media, every Monday night during the month of August. She is currently launching a creative art party business.  Jeanne teaches workshops in a creative art party format for birthdays and special events in people's homes.  This could include painting wine glasses, or making jewelry, or a custom craft project she can create for special events.  For more information, please contact Jeanne at creativeart.parties@gmail.com. Additionally, our talented friend is taking guitar lessons, singing in a cover band and secretly hoping that 80's BIG hair will make a comeback. She is a graduate of Cabrini College where she edited the art & entertainment and features sections of the student newspaper revived the college literary and art magazine, and hosted radio shows.

Editor Bonnie MacAllister renders moments in a variety of media. She is an editor of a multimedia collaborative site and print edition of Certain Circuits. She recently exhibited cross-genre work in New York at Et Al Projects and curated performances at Raandesk Gallery, in Maryland at Sandy Spring Museum, in Pennsylvania at the Ellen Powell Tiberino Museum, and in Virginia at Artomatic. Her written work has appeared in Flying Kite, Esque, On Barcelona, Classwar Karaoke, Apiary, and 10,000 Poets for Change: Fieralingue. She has debuted five original plays and readings at the Adrienne Theatre, Green Light Arts, Fringe Festival, Shubin Theatre, and Walking Fish Theatre. She has won multiple championships in poetry slam competitions in the US and France. MacAllister is a Pushcart Prize nominee and a Fulbright-Hays recipient to Ethiopia.

Additionally, Bonnie is the curator of Certain Circuits Magazine , which publishes poetry, experimental prose, art, and new media. Certain Circuits Magazine is hosting a workshop “Creating Collaborative Multimedia Poetry” at Big Blue Marble Bookstore on August 4 from 2:00-4:00.  Lora Bloom will co-teach the workshop.  The magazine is currently accepting submissions in all genres.  Submissions are due August 1; for guidelines, www.certaincircuits.org.  Zig Zag Handmade will be part of the Lancaster Avenue Second Friday Events, which will be on August 10.

Petroleum Paradox: For Better or For Worse?

 

As an artist -- what do you think about the Petroleum Paradox and what is happening in our oil dependent society and world?  How does that manifest in your work?

 

“The discovery of oil, in 1859, in Pennsylvania, transformed our way of life; we are enveloped by petroleum products - from the shoes we wear, to the materials our clothes are made of, to the way we heat our houses, to our modes of transportation.  Oil dependency pollutes the environment causing respiratory illness, endangers wildlife, and necessitates the large scale loss of life as we search to secure sources of oil overseas. How do we maintain our optimism despite this rush to grab dwindling non-renewable energy assets, instead of focusing on renewable energy and the prevention of global warming?

 

Our founding fathers could not have envisioned our two-party system, with the built in checks and balances, would fail to safeguard against tyranny of big business oil companies. The failure of our elected officials to implement an effective energy policy leaves the American people in a vulnerable position. A petroleum based economy subjects our citizens to resource-based wars that jeopardizes our children and holds our standard of living perilously tied to the price of a barrel of oil.

 

Fossil fuels are contributing to global warming and misinformation about global warming on media networks owned by major corporations, benefits the status quo. The self-interest of the American people is not paralleled by the self-interest of energy companies that seek to maximize profits at the expense of innovation and development. This exhibit seeks to raise awareness of our imperiled democracy and the Petroleum Paradox. What do you think about the Petroleum Paradox and what is happening in our oil dependent society and world?
