Women Artists at Miami Art Week

Although it is no surprise that women artists are still underrepresented at Miami Art Week, this year two events in particular were designed to highlight the inequities.

Philadelphia Chapter member, Virginia Maksymowicz, attended the opening reception and followup dinner for FAIR, the alternative, all-female fair being held at the Brickell City Center, a shopping mall in downtown Miami.

Most amazing to see were large installations by the Guerrilla Girls throughout the mall:

Also of interest was a panel discussion led by artnet News writer, Sarah Cascone, "Feminist Art for a New Era: Harnessing the Power of Art in the Fight for Women’s Equality," at SCOPE. Panelists included: artist, Zoe Buckman; Carolina García Jayaram, President & CEO of National YoungArts Foundation; Jennifer Scanlan, Curatorial & Exhibitions Director, Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center; and Mashonda Tifrere, Founder of ArtLeadHer.

A shout-out was given to Accola Griefen, one of the only galleries dedicated to representing the work of women artists. Their booth was part of Context Art Miami, and it featured Gina Adams, Nancy Cohen, Louise Kramer, Judy Pfaff and Renee Stout.
